westy Posted November 6, 2005 Report Posted November 6, 2005 today went to someone local who i know who keeps pigeons he said put cod liver oil on the pigeon corn and then sprinkle baby milk powder on the corn wich the cod liver oil will help it stick to the corn. martin
Guest WINGS 04 Posted November 6, 2005 Report Posted November 6, 2005 honey is a natural antibiotic and it should be given to the birds when they are racing as well as rearing young
Silverdale Lofts Posted November 6, 2005 Report Posted November 6, 2005 My breeders will be on a breeding mix. Added to the corn will be adherb. homoform will be given in the pots in the nest boxes when the young birds are 20 days old there will be pots of maple peas in front of them all the time. The drinking water will have gemthepax or garlic added.
Guest Posted November 17, 2005 Report Posted November 17, 2005 Pigeons needs lot of Hormoform and eggfoods, right?
jimmy white Posted November 17, 2005 Author Report Posted November 17, 2005 yes speight hormoform is very good, but it is fairly expensive, as i said before a good diet of peas and beans, some babies milk powder in their water,[ or the other way mentioned in an earlier post] plenty grit and minerals, and you should have nice plump healthy ybs, one thing i do beleive in though, is that they must get a good start in life, otherwise their never any good
james_mc_laughlin Posted November 17, 2005 Report Posted November 17, 2005 Any preference on the brand of baby milk used. I know they all come in different strengths.
james_mc_laughlin Posted November 17, 2005 Report Posted November 17, 2005 I agree with you Speight I am great believer in Hormoform, use it all year round. They say if it affects the colour of the droppings, you are giving them too much, but when the birds are feeding young you can't give them enough as they are constantly looking for it in their pots.
carl Posted November 19, 2005 Report Posted November 19, 2005 When you say pellets, what kind of pellets ?

Guest Posted November 20, 2005 Report Posted November 20, 2005 Thanks Speight. Brilliant info on Hormoform. Used it many years ago, but suspected then it was 'just' cod liver oil and 'something'. Now I know different, tempted to give it a try, maybe when the birds are paired up again next year.
Guest Posted November 21, 2005 Report Posted November 21, 2005 has anybody uses Versele-Laga Eggfood? What do you think of this eggfood? Best to mix hormform or seprate food????
MsPigeon Posted November 21, 2005 Report Posted November 21, 2005 Is this eggfood like the eggfood we give canaries? Is it canary eggfood? I make my own canary eggfood using a base of cous cous and a variety of other cereals, bran, or rice and mix with Ensure or similar canned milk type food supplement with all the vit. and minerals etc. I never thought of feeding pigeons eggfood. Interesting... Carol
GREENGRASS Posted November 21, 2005 Report Posted November 21, 2005 you have to feed the egg food to the hens a couple of weeks prior to laying it will ensure a good fecundation versele laga optimal start 25 is about the most popular, 10 spoonfuls per 20 birds and refresh every day, once the breeders are feeding the youngsters give it to both and when the young birds are weened after 24 days keep giving it to them until they start to fly about the loft. you can buy it in buckets and they were on sale at the show on saturday for £10 per bucket.

Interesting... Carol Yes some fanciers buys canary eggfood for pigeons, but we always buy eggfood from Versele-Laga Eggfood at Blackpool show. Versele-Laga came to Blackpool Show every year, sells the products and foods for pigeons. At blackpool show Versele-Laga Eggfood sells fast. I tried to give my fantails to feed the fantail babies in the nest from canary eggfood first time this year in the late summer, but i prefer buy from Versele-Laga's Eggfood

Do you gives hormform every day or twice a week in the winter (Moulting season) ? I gives fresh hormform every day in the racing season but in the Moulting season : twice a week and Breeding Season i gives fresh hormform every day. I would like to know how many times you gives pigeons a hormform in the Moulting Season and Breeding season.
carl Posted November 23, 2005 Report Posted November 23, 2005 Sorry to repeat myself but what kind of pellets do yous feed during breeding season. Hormform i was told feed in a seperate pot always keeping the pot topped up constant during the breeding season. pot of maple peas, pot of homform, pot of beans,
Guest Posted November 23, 2005 Report Posted November 23, 2005 Speight & Carl, I intend to feed Hormoform daily, in a plastic gallipot as if memory serves correctly it is fairly oily and plastic will be easier to keep clean. Speight, my birds moult is just about finished, most of them are on their end flights. I had been feeding them for 10/12 weeks on a moulting mix supplemented with beans, peas and maize. For the last 3 weeks they have been on beans only, with a seed titbit on Saturdays. Quite surprised how well they look on beans. After looking again at whats in what, I simplified my grit (2 kinds), minerals and pickstone arrangement to just one grit (hard) & pickstone. Thoughts for next year are staple diet of beans, and a seed titbit Saturday. Plus hormoform from a week before hatch, daily throughout season.
Guest Posted November 23, 2005 Report Posted November 23, 2005 Thanks Bruno but why did you gives them hormform before hatch? Bruno .
