jimmy white Posted October 31, 2005 Report Posted October 31, 2005 any opinions for rearing lovely, strong young birds
Guest Hjaltland Posted October 31, 2005 Report Posted October 31, 2005 Put carnation milk in the drinker while youngsters in nest... at least that's what Davy White reckoned...
jimmy white Posted October 31, 2005 Author Report Posted October 31, 2005 funny you should say hjaltland, that i put a couple of tablespoons of baby milk powder, reared up beautifull ybs.
westy Posted October 31, 2005 Report Posted October 31, 2005 dose it jimmy i have a couple of young lbs how often do you give it them and what dose it do to the birds
jimmy white Posted October 31, 2005 Author Report Posted October 31, 2005 its full of protein needed for growing, and good for the digestive system, same as carnation milk makes lovely healthy droppings, and i feel it gives them a good start in life, only my opinion westy, even a bird comming home very tired, recovers well with some milk added to their water
westy Posted October 31, 2005 Report Posted October 31, 2005 thanks jimmy i will get some baby milk powder tomorow after school shall i put it in the warter evrey day or once a week is it good for old birds aswell all the best martin
jimmy white Posted October 31, 2005 Author Report Posted October 31, 2005 i just used it when rearing young, a couple of tablespoons everyday in the drinker, till the ybs are weaned

MsPigeon Posted November 1, 2005 Report Posted November 1, 2005 A couple TBLS in how much water jimmy? what size drinker? I think it's a great idea, I use it when making my soft canary food so why not pigeons. Good idea. Carol
Guest Silverwings Posted November 1, 2005 Report Posted November 1, 2005 honey in the drinkers .clay blocks ,red cell suplement ,homofom and mixed canary seed .......give em corn as well ! with a smigeon of olive oil on it dried off with a bit of maize flower , red stone grit only and NO tap water ? they feather a lot faster with spring water .
Guest speckled Posted November 2, 2005 Report Posted November 2, 2005 Is that so,there feathers grow, faster with spring water.Bloody hell sprung a leak.Speckled.lol
jimmy white Posted November 2, 2005 Author Report Posted November 2, 2005 MS PIGEON ALONG WITH A HIGH PROTEIN DIET BEANS, PEAS ETC, PLENTY GRIT MINERALS ETC, I PUT ABOUT 3 TPS OF BABY MILK POWDER IN A 5 PINT DRINKER, THE FIRST TIME I USED IT , HAD THE BEST YB SEASON FOR SOME TIME, IVE USED IT EVER SINCE
MsPigeon Posted November 2, 2005 Report Posted November 2, 2005 Thanks Jimmy, I plan on trying the milk this year. Silverwings what is the clay blocks for? never heard of them. Carol
Guest Silverwings Posted November 2, 2005 Report Posted November 2, 2005 carol , the clay blocks are from natural granen ( Belgium) viterminarel pickstone i find the pigeons prefer them to the red blocks , and are eager to feed there young when given them ,seems to help cut down the feilding,, think versel laga do one as well , the baby milk powder as jimmy points out is a great rearing aditive , i allways use it for last evening feed ,but give them fresh water again in the mornings ,to avoid them getting a bit clogged on it ( dehydrated ) ......ray
Guest Silverwings Posted November 2, 2005 Report Posted November 2, 2005 speckeld sprinter , glad the spring water amused you ! Had this cheq cock evry time i let him out ,he went missing for about 20 minutes morning and evening ,thourght he was feilding ? tried all ways to stop him even sellotaped his beak up , didnt want him picking up poison ! this pigeon was always in super condition feathers glossed ,pink flesh , no scale even on his claws and beak ,like electric in the hand , decided to keep him in for a couple of weeks , after a day or so he was clawing at the wires to get out , as the week progressed his condition rapidly deteriated , had no rain for about 8 days, on the thursday it poured down ,at this point i noticed the chequer in the flight drinking the rain water, from the wire mesh ! it rained constantly for the next 3 days ! he did the same thing every time, and although still captive he returned to top condition again..........experiment : one fountain of still spring water one of tap water side by side ? after two weeks guess what ? most of the tap water was being left ? and all the pigeons with superb feather texture , as they pumped this into the squabs i noticed the protective sheaths on the growing feathers falling away earlier , pipe feathers ? thing of the past , so try it on those sprinters speckeled ? could make them slip through the air even faster ?........ray
Guest speckled Posted November 2, 2005 Report Posted November 2, 2005 \is that fresh spring water. :-/ ray, ya must get though a lot of bottles.
Guest Silverwings Posted November 3, 2005 Report Posted November 3, 2005 speckeld , have access to a natural spring ! filterering tap water through charcoal and limestone makes it softer ?
jimmy white Posted November 3, 2005 Author Report Posted November 3, 2005 THE BABY POWDER RE HYDRATES THEM NOT DEHYDRATES THEM, PUTS A SPRING IN THERE STEP :)
speedbird Posted November 3, 2005 Report Posted November 3, 2005 i usually single rear all my young also use pellets seems to realy bring the young on a treat
Guest Silverwings Posted November 3, 2005 Report Posted November 3, 2005 westy , honey is a natural energy provider , helps put a bit back into the parents during feeding especialy when the cock has to do most of it on his own ,when .the hen goes to nest again , honey is a natural health food and anti toxident and also promotes the growth rate of the youngsters .
Guest Silverwings Posted November 3, 2005 Report Posted November 3, 2005 nice one jimmy .what we promoting next ? how about gripe water ? ( Nurse harveys ) i got adicted to that stuff when my kids were little , it goes well with malt whisky ! tried me pigeons on it once, they kept jumping on me shoulder to have there backs patted ? also tried em on farleys rusks ? ,that realy put weight on the little buggers ! the missus went beresque when she woke up one night to find the second round in the cot next to the bed ? she said " you aint leaving them in there all night " i said " go on then put em in with us ? "
Guest speckled Posted November 3, 2005 Report Posted November 3, 2005 Hi ya speedbird, toataly agree with ya,i use pellets for rearing babies, won of the best things ya can do.Full of the goodness the babies needs, not much strain on the parents, when feeding pellets.what with :-/ the natural yogart,or baby milk, :-/ your choose ,healthy plump youngsters.Oh plus fillterd water, nearest i get a pure spring silverwings : :)Speckled
