Guest Posted March 30, 2006 Report Posted March 30, 2006 Whilst watching my birds this morning, I noticed a yearling cock with a flight missing each side, and when I checked him they are broken, right at the base and this is the same flight on both wings. Has anyone heard of or seen this b4, and is it worth pulling wats left out, in order for it to regrow, or will this trigger a full wing moult? Is it possible that feather lice has caused this??
jimmy white Posted March 30, 2006 Report Posted March 30, 2006 if its one of the first 3 flights , i wouldnt bother,,,if you pull a flight it usually grows in again slightly shorter, if its one of the outer flights you can "weld"a flight to it using a pin and super glue, but personally i would leave well alone
Guest Posted March 30, 2006 Report Posted March 30, 2006 Cheers Jimmy, Its the second flight on both sides from the inside, I will leave him till he moults if you feel it wont hinder him. It seems a bit strange how its the same on both sides! Stephen
Guest cloudview Posted March 30, 2006 Report Posted March 30, 2006 did this bird have a night out as a y/bird , it could have caused afret mark weakening the said flight and no lice only damage feather vanes
Guest Posted March 30, 2006 Report Posted March 30, 2006 Clue as to cause might lie in type of break. I've found fighting looks like 'a shattered tree-trunk', irregular broken edges kind of thing. Fret mark is usually a clean break, straight across or 'V' kind of thing. Can't help with insect-damage, never seen it, but believe its usually the chest feathers that get attacked?
robert.sutherland Posted March 30, 2006 Report Posted March 30, 2006 I think you will find it will drop the stubs pretty soon If they broken right at the bottom I would leave well alone besides the wing men would say this problem will make it a fast wing So maybe its a plus yours in sport bob
Guest shadow Posted March 30, 2006 Report Posted March 30, 2006 If you pull the flights you could get a blood flight grow in its place and you dont want that.
Guest Posted March 31, 2006 Report Posted March 31, 2006 Bruno, you may be right as it does look shattered rather than a clean break and he did have another cock fighting for his box a few weeks back, so it must just be a coincidence that its the same flight on both sides. Ill just leave him alone and if he goes down or is lagging then I can make a future decision if I get any more like it. Cheers Stephen
