What strain of birds do you keep Cod Father, and do you fly sprint, middle or long distance with them?

Ive given this alot of thought lately and I dont believe that stopping the birds racing will achieve anything whatsoever to stop the spread of birdflu...However it would show all concerned that we pigeon fanciers are prepared to do the honorable thing if we didnt race, after all in this society we live in the most important thing seems to be"appearing to do the right thing" not "doing the right thing" !!!!????

I'm in total agreement with doing the right thing, as there had been a lot of crap put out by the media which your normal Joe and Jane Sixpack will have taken on board and now cases have been reported in the United Kingdom will be having fits about seeing pigeons flying as when they are flying round the loft usually fly in a group and will attract attention.

There was a situation in Canada a couple of years ago when a form of bird flu hit the Frazier Valley and the Federal Government ordered the destruction of 19 million wild and captive birds. My good friend and the Pigeon Vet Dr. Gordon chalmers fought the government in high court regarding the pigeons and won, provided that the pigeons were kept in the loft on lock down.  When these facts were reported to the Pigeon Flyers some rebelled and said that they would continue flying their birds.this could have resulted in all the pigeons being destroyed under the Federal Order, reason prevailled and within a three month period they were back racing.

When exotic Newcastle disease hit several States about three years ago pigeon flyers were asked to work with the Government Vets by having their lofts inspected and tested most complied and kept their birds, the ones who refused to let the Goverment vets come in and test their birds LOST EVERYTHING THEY HAD, the Feds came in with a court order and destroyed every bird.  One futurity handler even defied a movement order and crossed State lines to mail out birds and caused untold grief to the people receiving these birds back from his race.

Don't please let this happen in the UK
