yesterday a cat got into my loft. It killed 1 bird before i could get it out. I dont know how it got in but i think it climbed up to the trap and then dropped in. The bird was ripped apart and i just saw the cat dragging it back to its house. The next door neighbours who own this cat are really stuck up. They dont care that it killed one of my pets and constantly teases my dogs.

Has anything similar happened to anyone else because i need some advice on how to deal with the situation.

P.S i only have a small amount of fancy birds and this has devastated me because i had a pair on eggs and they were disturbed and didnt go back to the eggs for about half an hour after...Will these eggs stil hatch???

any input is really appretiated... :-/

Sorry to hear about your problems, Jordan. A really nasty experience for you.

Second question easier to answer ... your eggs will be OK, just make sure the birds don't get another fright.

On the question of cats (1) NEVER leave your loft open and unattended. Your presence is your pigeons best safeguard.

(2) Bit surprised about what you say about your dogs - surely they keep everything away from the house & garden ??? ...... if the cat teases them surely they go for it????

Don't bother with these neighbours. If they are not concerned about a youngster losing a pet bird to their animal, they have little to be stuck up about. Try making the garden cat-proof and encourage the dogs to go for anything on their territory that shouldn't be there. One good ripping deserves another.

My dogs would rip it apart if they could get to the loft but i recently put a new fence up to stop the dog getting near the loft. The dogs would never harm any of my birds but when they are around it they think they belong with them and keep trying to get in...:D

When it happend yesterday i got a bit P****D off and started shouting to the neighbours about what i was gonna do to their cat. I have had a few encounters with it before and them when it killed a few of my ducks...

Thanks for the help bruno!!! any more input is really appretiated...

i invested in a cat repeller , it called an air rifle and a tin can ,  IT WORKS GOOD ;)

Know what you are saying  about cans, Rick but wouldn't encourage anyone to have a gun around the house. Apart from the bad press air rifles are getting [probably new tighter law on them coming ] you invite immediate suspicion on yourself if animals suddenly start getting pellet injuries or start disappearing from the neighbourhood.

Reckon letting the dogs have the run of the loft compound is cheapest and best.

hi jordan, i see your 15 years old, you really dont want to get in to trouble,

as bruno says your eggs should hatch, the good cat repelants  work, but what about a wee jack russel, [ the rotweiler would do the neighbours ;D ;D only kidding]

but really sorry this has happened to you, your better being there when your birds are out, lets hope you have no more bother

hi mate i got one of them devises that you can see above.since i had that not seen a cat in the garden.well it keeps the cats away when the dog not out there she would rip a cat to bits.but try a devise it works well.if you harm the cat and they find out about it you could get i big fine and also the local council would make you get rid of your birds so mate think before you act.

I never have any problems with them the dog scares them away it killed one it caught trying to get in the shed I tried to save it but once a jack russel is peed off its uncontrollable the funny thing is the dogs broken to livestock, hens, ducks, pigeons etc theres no problem but it has a hatred for rats and cats must be the breeding. Apolgised to the guy whose cat it was and offered him money he was kicking off threatening to ring the rspca and everything. Not my fault through the allotment is fenced off and I'm well within my rights to let my dog off his leash when I'm pottering about the pigeons as he is stock trained and I know my livestocks safe if someones cat is hiding under my pigeon shed whose fault it that. I tried to save the thing I hate cruelty and wouldn't put poison down or shoot cats like some people do but what can you do?

I think the law should be changed to make cat owners more responsible for their pets if I let my dog roam the roads and he killed a farmers livestock, sheep etc than I would be responsible rightly so futhermore the farmer would be well within his rights to shoot the dog and I would have no comeback. Cats are predators as well they should be controlled properly theres nothing more heartbreaking to a pigeon man than to go in his loft and see the carnage a cat can create you can kiss goodbye to having a good racing season after the damage an animal causes. If it was a wild animal like a fox, weasel, stoat etc than you would put it down to experience but the fact its someones pet and they get off scotfree is damn right annoying. I'm not advocating that cats should be shot but if the cat is caught in the cree and the owner can be traced the owner should pay compen and the cat should be destroyed by a vet.

Only fair isn't it. As for the cat teasing the dog it wants to be careful I knew a guy who had racing greyhounds and a cat used to tease his dogs by jumping on the wall above their pen and walking along it got cocky one day and fell in needless to say the results were horrifc someones pet killed causing tons of upset just because they couldn't control it and let it roam the roads.

Jordan, brunos advice is probably the best safeguard don't let your pigeons out unless you are around mate. If you want them to get some air fit another door to the inside of the loft a wire mesh door on rollers then you can leave the outer door open and the mesh door stops the cat getting in and lets your birds sit in the sun looking at the outside. If you fit a padlock and hasp to this door it should stop it getting opened by accident. Don't do anything stupid like poisoning the cat otherwise they will know it is you and you will get into trouble. If the dog gets it fair enough they can stay nothing if it is on your property.

thanks for all the input...

I have had the neighbors down the road(not the stuck up ones next door) report the bird earlier this week. My dogs have seen the cat since trying to get at the loft but they chased it off... I have two air rifles and when it happend i thought of going over the fence and shooting it in  its own garden but i know i only get fined or prosecuted. The eggs did hatch some time last nite as i found two squeaks in the bowl this morning. My new loft is nearly finsihed so i iwll be ably to get some of my birs into it probably next week. It is hopefully cat proof because i have fitted a bob-wire trap high up on the loft...

Thanks for all advice ;)
