jimmy white Posted July 7, 2006 Report Posted July 7, 2006 you could possibly be right clockman, but really what i was meaning was we had never heard of paramyxovirus a long time ago ,i only used the 20 years as a" long time ago " as a young fancier racing pigeons, we never had any bother or even had heard of this, im sure many of the older fanciers would agree with that,,,anyway after saying that ,i found brunos article to be most interesting, and would just wonder what his answer to his e mail would say,,it is only my opinion that since the vaccination started, racing has not been the same, more pigeons lost, looking at an old loft book ,which you will see , in 1958 started off with 9 ybs from the nest went every toss, race, right to the yb nat, which was cheltenham then ,finished up with 7 ybs, for some reason or another im quite sure that couldnt be done today, and this was the norm with many fanciers, the velocities were just as fast [or slow ]as todays , but we never lost as many birds. p,s it could have been 22 years ago ;D ;D ;D
Guest Silverwings Posted July 8, 2006 Report Posted July 8, 2006 Good points Jimmy , since this stuf has been force fed into our pigeons one or two nasty little ailments seem to have developed ie; Y.B.S and the majority of pigeons seem to have lost that spark ( Vitality) that they had years ago , perhaps were slowly degenerating them ? must admit i have NEVER injected any of my stock birds for the past 20 years they are completley free of it ? and their feather quality, depth of colour in the eyes and vitality supports this ?.....ray
Guest Posted July 8, 2006 Report Posted July 8, 2006 There is an independant Government body on the welfare of companion animals:- The Companion Animal Welfare Council [CAWC ] was launched on the 26th April 1999 and was set up to conduct independent studies into the welfare, care and treatment of companion animals and their role within society. The Council offers advice to members of the public, any other institution or organisation and the Government by publishing the results of their studies. CAWC has as its principal objectives: the provision of advice on the welfare of companion animals and the publication of its findings; the furtherance of the fuller understanding of companion animal welfare and of the role of companion animals in society; the assessment of existing legislation affecting the welfare of companion animals, and the making of recommendations regarding amendments or additions thereto. In the furtherance of these objectives, the Council intends to: undertake independent and objective studies of companion animal welfare issues and identify where further information is required; prepare and publish reports thereon; make available information and research data which it has obtained, in order to enable Parliamentary legislation on companion animal welfare issues to be drafted and debated on an informal basis; be open to requests for objective views, advice and the carrying out of independent studies on issues concerned with the welfare of companion animals. http://www.cawc.org.uk/index.html Don't really know if the best approach for an independent review would be by an individual or union body. Somehow, don't think the Unions would be too happy if I [for example] emailed CAWC for an opinion or a review of some of the legislation covering racing pigeons [ AI and PMV ] because of possible effects on their welfare ????? I have no doubt that homing pigeons fall under the category of companion animals. What else are they for at least 8 months of the year, when not racing or showing?
