Keith Morgan Posted October 12, 2006 Report Posted October 12, 2006 Hi can anyone tell me where I can find a chemical called Citromed.I am told it will help me fight Coccidiosis. I have just started to keep doves which are being homed under plastic netting in a polecote. Have had problems with two birds now, onedied 5 weeks ago and am treating 2nd with Coxoid but am told I should water ground/ grass under netting with diluted Citromed. Any help would be great.Keith Morgan. E Mail morgbarke@btinternet.com.
ribble Posted October 12, 2006 Report Posted October 12, 2006 hi, i think you will find it's citrus seed extract.some guys use grapefruit seed extract.i think you should be able to purchase it from health shops.
REDCHEQHEN Posted October 12, 2006 Report Posted October 12, 2006 There is something called citromed on the internet - to do with it getting rid of bacteria, but the majority of the information is in Norwegian (I think !) and I can't translate it........ http://www.nettutsalget.com/shop/default.asp?ReferrerStr=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Egoogle%2Eco%2Euk%2Fsearch%3Fhl%3Den%26q%3Dcitromed%26meta%3D&ProductID=132 It may have something to do with citrus fruit - have just found this: http://www.mamut.com/homepages/Norway/3/17/birdmedicine/subdet1.htm
pj1001 Posted October 12, 2006 Report Posted October 12, 2006 The only place That I know of where you can get Citromed is directly from Dr. Nils Reither D.V.M. (a well known Norwegian avian vet) at the 2nd site that Redcheqhen posted. We used the product last year and had some very good results with it with our young birds, the big advantage of the products Sinornis make is that the contain only natural products, thus as a result you aren't messing about too much with the pigeons immune system as you would with antibiotics. As far as I am aware the product is made from fruit extracts and is a liquid citric acid which acidifies the gut thus reducing the chances of bacteria developing there. Hope this is of help PJ
jimmy white Posted October 12, 2006 Report Posted October 12, 2006 keith, are you sure its maybe CETRIMIDE not thinking of,,this has many uses as a disinfectant and sterilizing agent , which could be used on the ground under your dovecote, in fact could be used by many fanciers for outside the loft on pathways etc or even for footdips at lofts , the reason i mention this is when i worked in the hospital , i used to use this [its used in hospitals for disinfectant and other reasons etc,]
jimmy white Posted October 12, 2006 Report Posted October 12, 2006 ithink citromed is the norwgian name , but im allmost sure its the same as english cetromide,
pj1001 Posted October 12, 2006 Report Posted October 12, 2006 CITROMED (antiseptic citrus seed extract) when the pigeons return form the races to kill off all possible diseases germs before they invade the pigeons. http://www.pigeonnetwork.com/vetdirectory/vetnorway/DrNillsReither/devtrichomonas.cfm
Guest Posted October 12, 2006 Report Posted October 12, 2006 With respect, reckon you're away on a wild goose chase. You have not identified what the problem is. You have new birds - are they all from the same source? If they came from different people, is it one person's birds that are dying? Are all the birds still together? The products you are talking about are for the drinking water. And be careful ... one of them has a bitter taste, probably put the birds off drinking it. The thing you are really trying to do is disinfect the ground around the dovecote. The ground under the net is grass / soil? Asking for trouble there. You've no idea what is in the soil / grass ... might even be something as simple as weedkiller ... or as nasty as ecoli ... nor the effect the pigeon's droppings are having on it. I'd sterilise the ground using something you will get out of any gardening shop ... jeyes fluid. Its for gardens, its safe, and its a DEFRA approved disinfectant for use in controlling bird diseases. Spray it on the ground and use it to wash out the dovecote too. Don't put it in the drinking water though. Something easily got too can go in there .. for example Cider Apple Vinegar, another 'plant product' acidic, antimicrobial .. from the local shop, on your doorstep. Lastly, try and identify the sick birds and seperate them from the others. Good luck.
jimmy white Posted October 12, 2006 Report Posted October 12, 2006 cetrimide you can buy in the chemist over the counter,[or you used to anyway] but its an antimicrobotic disinfectant and is an agent that destroys microorganisms that carry desease, which , when i got free, used to wash loft floor with it in the summer, and dilute in a watering can and spray all the outside of loft path , and garden, as thats where most worm eggs and cocci oocysts survive , in the damp conditions [and it has a lovely smell ;D]
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted October 13, 2006 Report Posted October 13, 2006 I USE ORDINARY HOUSEHOLD BLEACH FOR CLEANING MOST THINGS ABOUT AND INCLUDING THE LOFTS THEMSELVES, CHEAP AND VERY EFFECTIVE, IT WAS GOOD ENOUGH FOR CLEANING EVERYTHING ABOUT THE JAILS AND PRISON FLOORSAND KEEPING THE VERMIN DOWN IT CANT BE THAT BAD , COSTS PENNIES NOT THE POUNDS THEY THEY WANT FOR SOMETHING THAT IS NOT MUCH BETTER AS A CLEANSING AGENT ALLTHOUGH YOU HAVE TO WATCH WHAT YOU ARE DOING WITH IT " offensive call a halt"jw
