Approx 30 years ago when anyone caught a pigeon - it was returned. Kits were flown together if you lived nearby another. kit.

The sportmanship was around in them and they were the good old days.

I kept two almonds until saddly they died three years ago. I was given a pair of black badget tumbers. They caught me stray pigeons, which if had rings or were stamped were return to owners. Even feed watered and released the following day. This including racers.

This year in February 2006 we decided to build a new loft, increase the pigeons. So far today we have returned 13 lost pigeons (10 were racers). we have lost 38 pigeons only two were returned one founder wanted to keep him and gave wrong address. We managed to trace him and get our pigeon back.

I bought 100 rings - todays count only 9 left. the number of pigeons apprx 60 in the loft.

Where have approx 30 pigeons disappeared to?

we are seriously thinking about getting rid of keeping pigeons. Spending time and money to build up the kit. Seeing them fly and not return is heart breaking. If they are being caught in other kits why are they not returning them. We do not have a bird of prey proble yet?

The question I have, has there been an amendment to the rules on catching pigeons. If you catch a stray/ new pigeon found with your kit are can keep it, break its neck, feed it to the ferrets or sell them to the pet shop or give them to a friend to eat. When was this rule bought into pratice.

I still cannot get around keeping someone else pigeons unless they said keep it?

Does anyone feel the same way? and how can we get back to the good old days and bring back the sportman ship?

Currently I have set up a small group of four kits nearby. Any problems with strays, loses or predators we ring each other up.

please do reply?

We always report, return or release if required any lost birds.

This year we have only had about 10 stray birds and all returned or released to their owners.

We have lost about 25 this year including some older birds and we have had not a single reporting?

Did have one missing for a whole year that came back, it was healthy and in good form.(he has never gone missing from training runs this year, will race him again next year)

hi Dave

thanks for the reply.

It sounds like that someone is catching them. Either to keep & breed or sell them for a pound for the pot.

Even local petshop get stray racers and other pigoens in with rings, stamped etc to be sold for the pot. Which is a ilegal process. But no one does anything about it.

Ring is light blue colour whith my name & mobile number.

The two wings are stamped with the same information.

The latest stamp says: "LOST MY WAY HOME. PLEASE REUNITE ME WITH MY FAMILY nazar 07792863699"

please make note just in case and for future reference.

good luck.

I dont think the increase in birds of prey and the fact that we rarely get birds back is a coincidence!!! Ive not had as many strays enter my loft the last few years as I have previous years. Also Ive not had any birds back through the winter months like I could almost guarantee years gone by.

I've responded to other posts like this claiming that someone has all the missing birds in and is keeping them.

Don't think this is true. There are literally thousands of birds missing and few ever turn up. There's something weird afoot, and as I've posted before, we live on an Island where the birds can run out of land awfully quick, and some evidence of that hit the newspapers this year when a number of racing pigeons were found stranded on St Kilda, hundreds of miles off the Scottish West coast, with only Rockall between it and North America.

Last year one of my own hens racing from Leicester [257 miles] crossed the North Sea, and ended up on an oil platform in the Norwegian sector, 75 miles NW of Bergen, on the same latitude as the Faroes, having flown between 650 miles and 750 miles. She was nowhere near land and would have perished in the Arctic Sea.

It's just one of the mysteries of pigeon flying... Where do all the lost birds go??? Maybe it's some kind of pigeon black hole  ;D :-/

Seriously though, I think here in the US some people don't bother because they don't get the response they should. Like flyers saying they don't want the bird if it could not make it home. I have returned at least 5-6 myself this year and got a couple of calls for my birds. But truthfully if the bird is over 100 miles away I might ask them if they want to keep it unless it's enroute for our shipping truck or in a location near my training route. Time and gas is too precious these days. But at least I do respond to calls and work something out with the finders.

Yours in the sport.

i would say loads of birds are binned!!.i know some fanciers i have visited over the years who say they bin any strays that wont clear from their lofts .

i mostly report birds but find there are too many coming in that are not stamped or some kind of fone number.

most of the birds i get in are put in a basket then liberated next day ..weather permitting.

i think most dont report strays because there are too many flyers who try to avoid sending(and some not foning back)and  each one has been bred out of a champion.

i myself offer to send for any bird i send.but if the bird isnt wanted then i politely tell the person who reported it,that i will send for it if that person requires me too....or i will say if u dont mind.....the other option....then a big ty follows . ...........paul

lets be honest

does everyone want all the birds that go missing returned to us yes obviously there are exceptions but we cant pick and choose

going off the amount of birds we have reported to fanciers { which is all that wont clear on their own} there is about 5% that actually send for them

packing up

been in hospital

oap cannot afford carriage

would you like to keep it

would you throw it up often not asking what condition the bird is in

these are just some of the replies we get

no wonder some fanciers think its a waste of time and cost of phone call reporting birds

but we will continue reporting all birds that come in as its amusing to listen to the excuses rattled off by the so called bird lovers

;D I agree , many that we have reported give similar answers, keep it its such & such , chuck it up ( many way off line) , bin it etc . few are gratefull , but amtrak guys now know how to get in thru my complicated gate system and pass 2 bull terriers .  all very amusing , but myself have lost a great number of birds perhaps as many as 60 ! in 3 years ! to date had 8 returned ? :'(
