Guest Posted November 4, 2006 Report Posted November 4, 2006 John's post on use in athletics is spot on. Remember a couple of years back picking up a web item promoting its use in athletics to balance Ph levels in the body during lactic acid build up. Lactic acid is a byproduct of mammalian muscle action. Horses and humans are mammals. I do not know if there is a similar Lactic acid byproduct from avian muscle action. I'm sure others may be able to turn up info on this tho. But I have already posted elsewhere on the unique way the pigeon's body works during energetic flight especially the role of uric acid in regulating the bird's body temperature. So bicarb being an alkali might interfere with this acid [alkalis neutralise acids] and so interfere with, or stop, a normal body function.
