Sajfos Posted December 19, 2006 Report Posted December 19, 2006 Never had either of these problems.. Droppings are perfect all year round , Poultry pellets are for the Human Food Chain & therefore have to be High Standard , pigeon pellets may be different . Its probably getting the balance between pellets/mix/peas right . Once monthly I soak the pellets in Nystan to keep any fungal infection down.
MsPigeon Posted December 19, 2006 Report Posted December 19, 2006 What is Nystan Sajfos? I hadn't thought about possible fungal growth, but I live in a VERY wet climate! Thanks Carol
Sajfos Posted December 19, 2006 Report Posted December 19, 2006 Nystan (Nystatin) is for Human consumption (thrush). Best purchased in Spain , It eliminates any Fungal Infections in Pigeons. Down side to Pellets is they absorb moisture quickly & require keeping in the house . This is the reason I make sure the birds eat them ALL UP as soon as I put them in the trough ...not hanging around all day . Fed this way You are fine .
friendsloft Posted December 19, 2006 Author Report Posted December 19, 2006 Sajfos, I take it that Naystan can be purchased in this country as well. Also when you say i take it you mean slightly moist to the touch. friendsloft

Hi Sajfos, So is Nystan a treatment for pigeons with fungus infection or something to treat pellets with so they don't grow fungus? If it's a medication I would think that keeping the pellets dry and making sure they get eaten up quickly, as you said, would be a better remedy. Thanks, Carol
Jeremy Posted December 20, 2006 Report Posted December 20, 2006 Hi All Like I said in a earlier post I have used pellets for 20 years adding 10 to 15 % to the breeding diet. You would only get mould, fungi if they were stored incorrect i.e. in damp conditions I put mine in a plastic dustbin never had any problems. They also have a use by date which make sure you stick to. When they are made into a pellet they go through a heat process that kills any Fungi that were in the grains before hand so you know there safe before hand. Make sure where you buy them from that they store them correct and do a large turn over so they have not hanged around for months in a store. Sajfos I think using Nystan every month is the wrong way and prevent rather than cure. If you want to kill fungi put cider vinegar in the water 3 times a week 5ml to a litre this will keep them in top health. Long term use of nystan will bugger there immune system up..
Sajfos Posted December 20, 2006 Report Posted December 20, 2006 I agree Jeremy ..long term use of any medication is a step backwards but if You look at the length of Breeding season mine only receive Nystan twice or 3 times Maximum . I keep my pellets in the house in a plastic dustbin also. You are bang on pointing these issues out . As long as the Pellets are quickly eaten up there will be no problems . Steve .
