Can anyone tell me how long i should expect to wait for egg's after i paired up.I know it will prolly be a bit longer than normal due to the cold weather .Also ive got egg's of one pair 3 days after they paired could this be due to the hen pairing with another hen when they was seperated? how can i tell if the eggs are fertile ?

Lol so many question thanks guy's

hi ronnie,if your hens are not fat you should have eggs in about 8-12 days after pairing.

after birds have been sitting about 4-5 days hold the eggs carefully in front of a light bulb & you will see if youngster has started to develope inside egg.this will let you know whether egg is fertile or not.

WOULD HAVE TO DISAGREE WITH YOU ON THIS ONE YOUNG WILEY, I WOULD DOUBT VERY MUCH IF THE EGG WAS LAID THREE DAYS AFTER PAIRING AND EXPECT IT TO BE FERTILE WHETHER THE COCK HAD BEEN TREADING IT OR NOT

Ok thanks guys i think they are doing ok.Just one pair have laid but they have all paired nicely and have great big nest in the bowls.

mine have been paired up for a fortnight and only 2 pairs have laid, I'm putting it down to the cold weather.

Ronnie,  My birds are seperated by sexs until I mate them, after putting the pairs together I will usually have eggs by the 8th day.  I will guarentee you that the pair that had eggs after 3 days will not be fertile from the cock bird you paired her with and if only in with hens the eggs will be infertile, 18 days from when the second egg is laid you will have babies.   Good luck.   Ed

Thanks guys. Now the question is how long do i leave the egg's that are laid till i remove them .And then will the pair go straight back down on eggs or do i have to seperate them again.(providing they are infertile)

Sounds like you are planning on putting you fertile eggs on pumpers and then letting the pairs relay.  Its what I do and its a very good system if you have the pumpers for it.  I remove the fertile eggs after 7 days and place them under the pumper hen, once the eggs are removed from the pair it will take another 10 days at max before you have eggs again.  Sometimes the hen will continue to sit the nest for a day or two before leaving it.  Ed

you may be right wiley and i could be wrong, just feel it would be to quick for them to be fertile

well after checking the egg's against a Light it seem's Jeremy may be right. The second egg deffo looks like its got something in it where as the first egg just looks clear.Bare in mind this is all new to me me so i may be completely wrong :).

Again thanks alot guy's.I think ive posted it somewhere else but as a genuine novice (ive not even had the birds a year yet) the stuff that may seem simple to you usually sheds a lot of light on things for me.
