JohnS Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 I SEE THERE IS A PROPOSAL TO HAVE A NATIONAL RACE FROM SKIBBEREEN IN SOUTHERN IRELAND INTO SCOTLAND THIS YEAR. WHATS PEOPLES THOUGHTS AND OPINIONS ON THIS? MY PERSONAL OPINION IS ITS NOT A GOOD IDEA DUE TO LINE OF FLIGHT AND AFFECTS THAT THE WIND COULD HAVE ON THE BIRDS. WHAT I WILL SAY IS THE PEOPLE IN THE WEST SECTION OF THE NATIONAL WOULD APPEAR HIGHER UP THE RESULTS AND THE EAST SECTION WOULD STRUGGLE DUE TO NOT BEING ASSISTED BY THE WIND OR THE EAST COAST THAT THERE PIGEONS SCOOT UP ON MOST OCCASSIONS.
sj irving jnr Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 i cant see it happening, but you never know what distance would it be to lanarkshire?
ALF Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 i cant see it happening, but you never know what distance would it be to lanarkshire? I THINK WE RACE OUR YOUNG BIRDS FURTHER THAN THIS RACE WOULD BE INTO LANARKSHIRE
Guest WINGS 04 Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 THIS IS ONE OF THE HARDES RACE POINTS TO RACE FROM AND THAT IS IN TO IRELAND
ch pied Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 SKIBBEREEN TO HAMALITON ----- ABOUT 360ML
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 i cant see it happening, but you never know what distance would it be to lanarkshire? ITS ABOUT 350 MILES
ALF Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 SKIBBEREEN TO HAMALITON ----- ABOUT 360ML CHEERS MATE WAS JUST ABOUT TO CHECK GOOGLE FOR IT MYSELF DIDNAE THINK IT WAS THAT FAR BUT IT WOULD BE VERY HARD FOR THE DOOS GOING SO FAR WEST!!!

Chris Little Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 It is a fantastic idea It will get my vote
dandydoo Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 Chris ...why is it a fantastic idea ...... many Fanciers wouldn't agree with you and my opinion is that they wont get the Birdage ...the Irish are wary of this and have been slaughtered on many occasions ...their wrds not mine
Chris Little Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 Why do I think is is a good idea..... It will be a challenge and something new All the racepoints are in the east , why not have one from the west, give others a chance :
dandydoo Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 I agree with the West for balance but there ...not sure although I have to say that the west Road is polluted with raptors more so than the east. Best racepont we have had was belgium ...think it was Liege
ALF Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 WELL I THINK THE RACE POINT IS TOO FAR WEST AND WE WOULD GET HAMMERED BUT THEN AGAIN THAT IS ONLY MY OPINION ;) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
frank-123 Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 think most feds fly a easterly route into scotland bit of a jump a way west would be intrested if our pals in dundee, fife or aberdeen would be in favour of such a race
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 WELL I THINK THE RACE POINT IS TOO FAR WEST AND WE WOULD GET HAMMERED BUT THEN AGAIN THAT IS ONLY MY OPINION ;) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D AYE AND IT COUNTS FOR NOTHING YOU BIG MONKEY
JohnS Posted January 6, 2007 Author Report Posted January 6, 2007 IN ONE OF MY PREVIOUS POSTS I MENTIONED THAT THE PIGEONS IN THE EAST COAST HAVE AN ADVANTAGE SCOOTING UP THE EAST COAST(MANY PEOPLES OPINION). THIS IS PROBABLY WHY SOME PEOPLE(PERHARPS A MINORITY) WANT A RACE FROM THE WEST TO PREVENT SUCH AN OCCURENCE. I PERSONALLY WANT TEH PIGEONS TO BE DOWN A CENTRAL ROUTE EG NEWBURY SO TAHT NO AMTTER THE WIND THE PIGEONS CAN ADAPT AND HAVE A CHANCE OF GETTING HOME. I THINK NEITHER WEST OR EAST ROUTES R BETTER AND PEOPLE ONLY VOTE TO CERTAIN ROUTES SO TAHT THEY THINK THEY R GAINING SOME SORT OF ADVANTAGE. AT SCOTTISH NATIONAL LEVEL I PERSONALLY BELIEVE IN CHANNEL RACES THE LOFT LOCATION BECOMES LESS IMPORTANT HOWEVER THE OCCURENCE OF PIGEONS BEING TIMED IN FIFE,DUNDEE AND ABERDEEN BEFORE PIGEONS IN THE WEST SECTION PROVES THE EAST COAST IS OF MASSIVE IMPORTANCE TO NUMBER OF LOFTS. WHAT I WILL SAY IS ONCE IT COMES TOTHE YOUNG BIRD NATIONAL THE FEDS/CLUBS R STREETS AHEAD OF MY AREA. MY FEDERATION(LANARKSHIRE), THE BIGEST IN SCOTLAND, HAS A LONGEST YOUNG BIRD RACE OF ROUGHLY 140 MILES(RACEPOINTS DIFFER EACH YEAR), WHERE AS UP THE EAST THERE BIRDS HAVE BEEN AT OR PAST THE YOUNG BIRD ANTIONAL RACEPOINT. A BIG ADVANTAGE IN MY OPINION. A QUESTION I MUST ASK TO THE FORUM IS HOW FAR IS YOUR LONGEST FED YOUNG BIRD RACE???
ticeye Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 skibbereen can be a very easy race or very hard i race with the nipa and the infc 247 miles to my loft the east coast of n. ireland always does quite well in this race point although wexford does well in the infc national the wexford fanciers are short fliers but their birds must break from the convey as for raptors i think it does not matter what line of flight the birds take the hawks are there i think it would be a good race for the west of scotland but flying young birds 350 - 400 miles is a bit of an ordeal

JohnS Posted January 6, 2007 Author Report Posted January 6, 2007 THATS MY POINT, I THINK YOUNG PIGEONS SHOULD BE FLYING AT LEAST 180-200 MILES IN A FED RACE BEFORE A NATIONAL. LAST YEAR THERE WAS A FORTNIGHT GAP ALLOWING PIGEONS TO RACE FROM WAKEFIELD IN AN OPEN RACE BEFORE THE NATIONAL. THIS RACE STOOD THESE PIGEONS IN GOOD STEAD AS BY LOOKING AT THE RESULTS OF BOTH SOME PIGEONS SCORED IN BOTH.THIS YEAR WE DONT HAVE A FORTNIGHT GAP.I UNDERSTAND WHY WE COME BACK TO OTTERBURN TO GIVE LATTER BRED YOUNGSTERS A RACE BUT WHY NOT HAVE AN EXTRA RACE FROM 180-200 MILES? PEOPLE ALWAYS BLAME THIS THAT AND THE NEXT THING FOR LOSSES. MY OPINION IS THAT IT IS DISTANCE THAT SEPEARTES THE BETTER PIGEONS FROM THE BUNCH. ANY ONE WHO DISAGREES THAT DISTANCE= LOSSES ASK YOUR SELF THE QUESTION IF WE HAD FIVE OR SIX KELSOS/OTTERBURNS(60 AND 80 MILES) WOULD WE LOSE AS MANY PIGEONS? IF OUR PIGEONS CANT DO IT, HOW CAN WE EXPECT THE NEXT GENEARTION TO DO IT??
pj1001 Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 I would stay well clear of it if I was a Scottish fancier, unless the committee is planning for a couple of short races beforehand from Northern Ireland or the Republic to get the birds used to the route. I remember the time the Northern Irish fanciers had to fly out of Scotland at the time of the Newcastle Disease outbreaks, 75-80% of the best south road birds were wiped out in less than 3 years. This was mainly due to a lot of the birds not being able to orientate leading to very erratic races and massive losses with the birds encountering a lot of hawk attacks (birds homing badly injured), especially from places like Thurso, Lewrick, Fort William. A lot of the older experienced birds ended up flying down the English coast and crossing lower down and homing as if they were flying from Wales. Our area which was then one of the longest flying raced well and won numerous Opens and Sections but the racing was very erarrtic at best and a lot of birds I feel won't turn overnight from flying south to north-east. If the race is going to be during our young bird season there will be in the reagion of 35,000 + birds in the air with all the Southern Ireland Feds, the NIPA. Ulster Fed and the East Down Combine most weekends, so if you are considering a race I would try and use an alternative day to a Saturday liberation. Just my thoughts. PJ
Guest Gareth Rankin Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 I think it is the same as all the other races if the weather is good you have a good chance of a successful race, whether it will get passed at the agm i have my doubts, but i would be inclined to give a go as Chris has said it is a new challenge. PS I thought it was an interesting proposal for the SNFC agm about the SNFC looking into racing along with the INFC out of the longest race from France. :-/
