OUT OF PEANUTS BEANS AND MAPLES PEANUTS HAS THE HIGHEST PROTEIN CONTENT AND LESS CARBOHYDRATE CONTENT, AND THEN BEANS NEXT AND MAPLES THIRD, I NEVER SPECIFICALLY FEED MAPLES BECAUSE OF THE HIGHER FAT CONTENT

PEANUTS   PROTEIN    CARBS

                 30.2         11.6

BEANS        25.4         53.3

MAPLES     22.5         59.1

THIS IS PART OF THE COMPOSITION OF ONE OF EACH, THERE IS WATER AND ASH AND FIBRE CONTENT AS WELL AS OTHER THINGS IN EACH ITEM OF FEED AND ONE OF THE THINGS THAT PUZZLES ME WITH THIS IS WHY DO YOU FEED PEANUTS FOR LONG DISTANCE WHEN IT HAS SO LITTLE CARBOHYDRATE CONTENT, THE HIGH PROTEIN LEVEL MUST JUST BE ADVANTAGEOUS AT THE START OF A RACE BECAUSE THERE IS NOT ENOUGH CARBOHYDRATES IN THEM TO BE ANY USE IN THE LATTER STAGES OF A RACE WHEN CARBOHYDRATES ARE NEEDED

SO WOULD YOU USE MAPELS THEN TAM FOR THE LONGER RACES ITHINK THE PEANUTS ARE JUST TO TOP THE BIRDS UP AS WHEN THE ARE GOING TO THE LONGER RACES THEY ARE SET UP ON EGGS OR YOUNG BIRDS AND ARE NOT TO KEAN ON THERE FOOD IF THE ARE RIGHT FOR THE RACE

plenty protein feed , ie, maples , even beans a few peanuts , youll find when feeding ybs they wont eat much   maize[,if any] they know what they want, or need :)

you say that jimmy but for a couple of days in the cycle if you watch your birds carefully you will notice that maize is all they take. Dont rely on giving the birds all of one thing like protein ect as they need a varied balenced diet. If you are going to rely on protein products try giving a breeding corn in the mornign as much as they can eat. And then a high protein one in the evening! I wouldnt suggest just loading them up with protein by itself!

hi tammy

i always thought peanuts contained fats, hence the reason they were feed for long distance as they are a store of energy that can be released slowly? Not so sure now that you posted up its nutritianal contents

i feed peanuts only to race birds,as most know its amazing how docile ur birds will become around u.  peanuts have a high fat content and some use them on basketing days because the birds dont need to drink as much in the basket as would be with corn.

corn...i feed a cheap farm mix with beans/mixed peas/maize and some wheat.

which i feed stock on most year round. race birds are fed a high protein economy with extra maples and some beans.

i do tend to like a good assortment of small seeds in my race mixes as some mixes dont have the daily amount of vitamins/minerals in them....paul :)

note: just took out repeat post and reply noting it as such.  :)

My birds have been on Breeders mix + hormoform since mid-December. Intend to continue with this until youngsters are shifted, continue same for them, then onto racing mix for OBs.

Saw an advert in BHW for Gem G10 pellet supplement. Toying with trying it from sitting eggs, for the probiotic content. Have never fed pellets before so this would be my 1st experience. Fed as 10% max portion of feed,, one 20kg bag should last the season. At £13, a cheap experiment ...  :) if it is successful of course.  :)

I AM NOT REALLY A FAN OF MAPLES AT ALL RAB, I TEND TO ADD MORE MAIZE FOR THE LONGER RACES, THIS WAS SOMETHING HUGHIE BROWN SHOWED ME AND HE NEVER USED MAPLES , WELL THATS WHAT HE TOLD ME AND HUGHIE WAS HONEST, HE FED HIS BIRDS BEANS NEARLY ALL THE TIME WITH MAIZE BEING ADDED AS THE RACES GOT LONGER, AND HIS YOUNG BIRDS NEVER GOT ANYTHING ELSE EXCEPT BEANS WHEN HE WEANED THEM AND OVER THE LAST SIX YEARS IT WAS EITHER HUGHIE OR MYSELF THAT WON THE YOUNG BIRD AVERAGES, DUNNO IF YOU HAVE SEEN IT RAB BUT THERE IS A CRACKING TABLE ON THE DOWNLOADS PART OF THE FORUM AND IT HAS A GRAINS COMPOSITION TABLE AND LETS YOU SEE EVERYTHING ABOUT ALL THE DIFFERENT GRAINS AND HOW THEY ARE MADE UP, IF YOU LOOK AT THE COMPOSITION OF BARLEY YOU WILL SEE IT IS AN EXCELLENT FOOD AND YET A LOT OF MEN RIDICULE BARLEY, NORMAN ORR USES LOADS OF BARLEY AND LOOK AT HIS RECORD RAB, WELL YOU KNOW IT SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO LOOK ANYWHERE

WELL I HAD THE SAME OPINION ABOUT PEANUTS FOR DISTANCE WILEY BUT THAT COMPOSITION TABLE SHOWS DIFFERENT, I USED TO GIVE SOME FOR LONGER RACES BUT AS THEY ARE AS HIGH IN PROTEIN I AM GOING TO TRY THIS YEAR AND GIVE THEM FOR THE FIRST RACES JUST TO SEE IF THERE IS ANY DIFFERENCE

good idea tammy also would be good for the early training regime as it would help the muscles become stronger,as the mucles will become damaged at this process anbd the protein will repair them and make them bigger and stronger good post tammy

Didn't give this a thought as all my feeding [bucktons] has a 'best before date' and that is one year after bagging. Are G10 pellets perishable and shorter life? What's the period of time they have to be used up in?

And thanks for bringing this up.  :)

Feed a good quality mixture twice a day to all birds while breeding in trays on floor, pots of maples in each nest 24/7. 2 pots of G10 pellets on floor for birds to eat at will, refilled as required. Used these G10's last year for first and noticed that youngsters grew a lot faster than normal had to ring most after 5 days.

Any G10's that wheren't used after round of youngsters weaned where used in young bird mix when they where moved to young bird section. I don't know it if it was the Gem in the pellets or what but had the healthist team of youngsters we had in years and they remainded healthy all year.

Won the club from all 4 of the longest young bird races, normally these races we don't send to as we normally on race youngsters 3/4 races a year,  but due to loosing very few youngster all year and had surplus so tried a few out.

Sent 10 to each of the 2 derbies and all 20 home 240 miles.

Sent  6 to inland national 240 miles 5/6 homed

Sent 2 to young bird national 100miles 1/2 home.

I don't know if it was just a good year for us and birds were healthy all year or it was due to G10's, But I would reccommend using them.

Hope this information is of help

TAM ALL I FEED MY YOUNG BIRDS IS BEANS AND MAPELS I THINK IT GIVES THEM A GOOD START AND THIS WILL PUT THEM RIGHT WHEN THEY ARE OLDER

Hughie used to hammer the peanuts into them in the run to the race as well Tammy the high amounts of digestible fats is what is useful here.
