;) i intend to float eggs from stock under racers , has been suggested to me to wait until 10 days after layed , because u can see if they are fertile ? why wait ? if unfertile ,so be it ? why can i not float at say 5 days , surely this will reduce laying of second round ,would like all ybs around same age ? .................... looking forward to youre replies :B                                                andy   8)

Hi Andy,

My understanding of the 10 day rule is a bit different. 10 days is the generally recognised hen's 'minimum rest time needed' between rounds. Gives her vents a chance to close and her body a chance to recover from developing and laying her last two eggs. Derik Norden on SNFC video a few years back spoke about a hen going back down under the 10 days and ended up with her oviduct on the loft floor.

An added thought for her cock too: driving is a pretty stressful time for him (and for her) so there's a decent break period between these cycles too to consider.

After 10 days sitting etc. etc.

Just put the egg in front of a household bulb, after 2 days sitting and you will see what look like thin veins. If they are there, the egg has been filled.  ;) Vic.
