Peckedhen Posted January 26, 2007 Report Posted January 26, 2007 I paired my yearlings on 3rd January. By 17th they'd all laid but, out of 14 eggs only 8 are filled!! Is this usual with yearlings? Did I do something wrong? :-/
Marky5 Posted January 26, 2007 Report Posted January 26, 2007 Possibly the cock did not tread the hen properly in the box , did you provide the birds plenty of vitamin E either on the corn or in water. How long did you leave them locked up for?, before letting them out.
Guest Posted January 26, 2007 Report Posted January 26, 2007 Quite often with yearlings, only just getting used to having a box and hen etc they get distracted when they mate by the older more bullish cocks rushing them when mating. Sometimes they just get so excited they miss the mark so to speak.
Marky5 Posted January 26, 2007 Report Posted January 26, 2007 Darren , Locking the cock in with the hen for an x amount of days until hen lays does account to something , depends on how wide and big your boxes are. Yearling cocks play about and you do get one or two that do not tread the hen properly. Taubenfit E50 will help with fertility , and Hemp oil will help promote a good sex drive.
pigeonscout Posted January 26, 2007 Report Posted January 26, 2007 Could be the eggs got cold because the birds where chased of the nest by vermin or a cock bird that wants more than one box.
Peckedhen Posted January 26, 2007 Author Report Posted January 26, 2007 They didn't get vitamin E - just Kirkpatrick's minerals and red clay pick. They were in the boxes for a couple of weeks till I got them stayed. One egg may have got cold - it started developing then stopped. No rodents in my loft!!
Guest Posted January 26, 2007 Report Posted January 26, 2007 Good point marky, definately would account for birds locked in.
Peckedhen Posted January 26, 2007 Author Report Posted January 26, 2007 So do you mean they need to be out of the nest box more? I did see some of them treading in the box. :-/
Guest Posted January 26, 2007 Report Posted January 26, 2007 Maybe a bit soon if you are taking the later eggs as 1st egg on or around 17th. By 10 days (from around 19th) you should notice them becoming darker and heavier(light won't pass thro them) . You had a bit of bovver settling the pairs, but not enough to lose 6 out of 14 eggs I'd have thought. Give it a few more days.
Ronnie Posted January 26, 2007 Report Posted January 26, 2007 Agree with bruno give a bit more time.Ive just paired 9 pairs of yearlings and all egg's were filled ok.My cocks had there box's for about two weeks before i gave them there hens and where only locked in there box's for about a week when paired.(that was locked in for a few hours at a time till they got used to the right box).
jimmy white Posted January 26, 2007 Report Posted January 26, 2007 just wondered if you had lights in your loft , as switching them off suddenly, its possible that some were not on their eggs at the time , thenthe eggs would get chilled ,,,just a thought, :)
Marky5 Posted January 27, 2007 Report Posted January 27, 2007 Peckled Hen , Suggest you get some Vitamin E (Taubenfit from Rohnfried).Best to start letting one pair at a time out of their boxes after about 2 to 3 days.
