I have 12 nestboxes to race yearling cocks on widowhood. Unfortunately, one of my favourites has not taken his box and his hen has laid in the corner of the section.

I have no ides how to progress this cock on to widowhood when he has not claimed his box.......advice/info appreciated

Thanks

Alan

DONT KNOW MUCH ABOUT WIDOWHOOD BUT DO YOU NOT LOCK THEM UP IN THEIR BOXES WHEN YOU ARE PAIRING THEM UP TO LAY ?

Albear, Seal the spurned nestbox off entirely, no roosting, or whatever by any

other birds, use cardboard, plastic, anything!   Leave them on the floor until ybs are 12 days old.     Remove hen, and place him in the nestbox with ybs, to finish off the weaning stage, keeping a wary eye on him for a day or two.

This will work, No doubt! Cheers,  Vic.

Thanks, sounds like can race him to the floor or to the box. Think I'll try Vic's suggestion and if it doesn't work, then race him to the floor and see if that works.

Thanks for the replies to all

If the hen has not laid her second egg, move the nest to the box and lock them in it until she lays.

I've only ever allowed birds to nest on the floor once, and had both youngsters scalped when they were 7-8 days old. Had them lay there, but always managed to get them back to their own box.

Albear, put a saddle perch somewear near wear he is nesting so when you part the hen with the youngsters he will take to the perch,if you feed your cocks in the boxes make this cock take the feed from the other boxes were the cocks are already use to,this will keep all your cocks on their feet and make them race better, plus if a cock goes down during racing then the cock will take his box and fly his head off to his new box,its all called "MOTIVATION" and will win you top races.Les
