Not sure it's so much a case of going soft than getting wise to the fact that there may be something wrong in it;

My birds are for the most part all down on eggs and I am back & forward trying to decide how many I am going to breed from, rather than how many I would like to breed from, and why.

As far as numbers are concerned, I've 18 race birds, 5 of which are late breds and what I do with them this year will affect the number of youngsters I breed. My thinking is that if I train them but don't race them as members suggest, then that's 5 fewer youngsters I breed this year.

I found 26 pigeons a very comfortable number to keep over the winter, and I 'achieved' that number thro natural wastage (accidents, hawks) and by flying the birds out. So I have the option of breeding 13 or 18 youngsters which will give me near enough the same year-end numbers. As other posts show, there's no point in breeding any more, its a sheer waste of time, money & birds.
