tango_kid Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 Hello, today i went to the great yorkshire show, and although i couldnt find any pigeons (were there any or did i just miss them?) i really enjoyed the poultry show and i was thinking about showing pigeons. Now i have no idea how you go about it or anything about it really. So i was wondering if somebody could give me an insight into: 1) How much of your time does it take up daily + Weekly? 2) What would be good breeds to start SHOWING? 3) How much space do the pigeons require and how would you give them this (sheds, rabbit hutche, ect) 4) How would you start up if you were going to start from scratch with mimimal costs?? Cheers, Mike
Glassfeather Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 I think most of your questions will be answered at this website: http://www.nationalpigeonassociation.co.uk/

tango_kid Posted July 16, 2009 Author Report Posted July 16, 2009 I don't have anything im afraid, hence all the questions.
pjc Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 1) How much of your time does it take up daily + Weekly? No more time than looking after any birds, keep loft clean, feed water etc. A lot of time can be taken traveling to shows. 2) What would be good breeds to start SHOWING? Pick an easy breed to start with but firstly decide on a flying breed like racer/show racers, tumblers etc or a fancy breed. If you go for a fancy breed, find a show to go to and have a look at the diferent breeds, talk to the breeders before making a dessicion. 3) How much space do the pigeons require and how would you give them this (sheds, rabbit hutche, ect) As with any, what ever size shed you have don't overcrowd it. Its much easier to keep birds clean than to have to clean them every time you want to show them. 4) How would you start up if you were going to start from scratch with mimimal costs?? Get a shed/loft, decide on what birds you want and then ask around and see what becomes available.
tango_kid Posted July 16, 2009 Author Report Posted July 16, 2009 Well i sould be going to driffeild. Is there any specific breeds i should look out for which are easy but mabye not really common such as fantails.
Glassfeather Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 1) Depending on how many birds, they can get by on 10 or twenty minutes a day once you have established a routine, but it is a good idea to spend longer with them, observing them, making sure they are all getting fed and watered, and so on. Also, it is just pleasurable to spend time with them. 2) It's a matter of choice really, and adapting your facilities to the choice you have made. Best thing to do is to get chatting with people who keep the breed you would like to keep, find out how they do things, the different methods etc... 3) Again, it's down to what you can afford/are prepared to spend, and the space you can afford to devote to them. Some people get along just fine with rabbit hutch style boxes, but these perhaps wouldn't be suitable for some breeds with feathered feet and such like. I suppose ideally, you would want something like a six by ten, divided into two large sections and a smaller section for food storage etc.., and a couple of pens. This way you can rotate them, breeding section/young bird section, then cocks/hens. 4) Visit as many shows as you can, find out who has regular success with the breed(s) you hope to keep, talk with them and ask as many questions as they are prepared to answer, obtain the best stock you can afford. You may find this forum helpful, it is all about fancy breeds: http://fancypigeonchatter.forumakers.com/forum.htm
Guest bigbok Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 i would agree with graeme the only advice i would offer is joing the npa and obtain a decent fancy pigeon book and look through and see iff any breeds take your fancy turning up at a show and taking the first birds you fall in love is not usually the best course and definatly make a trip to a championship show and see and talk to as many fanciers as you can try darlington champ show in november or npa national in december and also nottingham and peterbourgh and blackpool and egremont all have decent entries so depending where you are nearest come along for the day
Guest bigbok Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 ohh forgot to say pigeons were on wednesday their will be pigeons at the countrywise show held in the same place in october they usually get about 600-800 and are getting more entries as it is a new show
