hi

Is it common for a bird to only lay 1 egg???i went down to the loft today and there was still only one egg in the bowl that one of my hens was sitting...i have checked around the bowl and on the floor for if their is any shells about. The first egg was laid on monday is she likely to lay again? Also will a single hen lay eggs if she hasnt mated and isnt paired up with a cock because i have what i thought was a cock and hen that havnt paired up but the hen has laid. The cock isnt showing much interest with the hen...

can anyone give me any answers???

had this problem myself this year with yearling hens only laying one egg, never known a hen to lay unless it was either paired with a cock or hen

Hi Jordan.

Your spare hen will lay if she has any stimulation from a cock, even just crowing & sweeping at her thro the bars is enough to set her off.

The only bird that I've heard lay without a cock bird being anywhere near, was a budgie in a cage, my gran's I think, and I was told it was probably due to overfeeding. Can't comment on that being a reason tho, because its also given as a reason for hens not laying .. too fat  :)

Sometimes the hen's cycle goes wrong, and she only lays one egg in the first round. But it is most probably age - a youngish hen around 6 months not really fully mature? Should be OK on her next round of eggs.

If your pair don't lay other egg... Put dummy egg with it...
