me Posted August 1, 2007 Report Posted August 1, 2007 What do you guys think are the health implications of moving birds from one loft to another, young or old? What would you do or give to support the birds immune system at this difficult time to ensure birds don't succumb to the many opportunistic nasties waiting to pounce?
jimmy white Posted August 2, 2007 Report Posted August 2, 2007 i think this is a problem where fanciers are getting birds from a lot of differant sources , i think , first i would make sure of the sources , but i think having dropping tests done regular to begin with, other wise try to calm and tame the birds to lessen the stress ,vits in the water twice a week ,i think stress is the main factor in" succuming to the nasties waiting to pounce" anyway you can reduce this would def help .....T,L,C,
DOVEScot Posted August 2, 2007 Report Posted August 2, 2007 I think if you are moving your own birds as we about to do when our new loft is completed, it's not as bad, we are trying to move them in stages like when they finnish rearing, seperating cocks and hens, young birds into new section etc. It's different when buying in birds, we made the big mistake in the beginning by being too keen and buying too many birds at the one time, trying to get a number of strains to breed but found out to our pearl we also brought in all the different immune systems. All good birds in their own right but they could not cope with all the different strains mixing
me Posted August 3, 2007 Author Report Posted August 3, 2007 yes agree with both posts "super health" is what we have to aim for but would you use to ensure the birds health is not compromised ,regular treatment plan including antibiotics.or just supportive therapy.
jimmy white Posted August 4, 2007 Report Posted August 4, 2007 supportive therapy ,,[sounds good ;D] if i had to resort to antibiotics, the birds wouldnt be in the loft in the first place,,,,,,antibiotics are to cure an ailment,, not for routine use my opinion
me Posted August 4, 2007 Author Report Posted August 4, 2007 supportive therapy ,,[sounds good ;D] if i had to resort to antibiotics, the birds wouldnt be in the loft in the first place,,,,,,antibiotics are to cure an ailment,, not for routine use my opinion But surely Jimmy antib's are just one more tool in the fanciers box and these birds are particularly susceptible to any opportune attack!!
jimmy white Posted August 4, 2007 Report Posted August 4, 2007 in my opinion ,if their constitution cant respond to "supportive therapy ", then the birds cannot be strong enough [constitutionally] to be in the loft in the first place
