does it matter any more in which way your loft faces nowadays because most lofts

are closed up and if your loft faces north do you have good results

POSITIONS OF LOFTS HAVE NEVER AFFECTED MY RESULTS , LOFTS FACE IN DIFFERENT POSITIONS BECAUSE OF SPACE AND NEVER MATTERED

How would you know that you wouldn't have performed better if you loft faced south??

Has anyone actually changed the loft position at the same site to face in all different directions and found which direction to be the best? (I expect someone has)

And doesn't it depend then on the materials that make your loft, when they come in to form?

A generalisation is that south should be the best way but there are so many circumstances that can influence this.

Interesting observation Albear, and a very good point to make. Our lofts are built in a square, so we have lofts that are facing all directions. We have at some point over the years flown / raced into all of them, and won races and averages in clubs in each of them. The best performances have come in the loft facing South, the second best performances have come in the loft facing West. third best was the loft facing east, and finally, the worst was the loft facing north! Hope this helps! The loft facing north is purely a stock loft now!  ;D

Rose understand what you say....I'm just pointing out unless you try the unusual you will not know. Your instincts are that it is better to have your distance birds in the loft with less sun...........however to come to a solid conclusion you would need to 'reverse' the loft and ensure, the loft composition was as it  was, I'm not trying to teach you to suck eggs Rose, would wish we had your record (but we are on the move) but trying to point out a very important fact, one I try to make all the time when I write about the eye. Don't take things for granted, prove them for yourself, for example some people swear by a big circle around the eye, when was the last time you saw a champion with a massive circle, not often!

Davey thanks for that quite fascinating and observant!!

thank you for all replying to my post.

To rose and the other who have your lofts facing north are your loft closed in?

My loft face north and 60% of the loft is open to the weather front and back, no rain can get in.

but they is no sun shining into my loft.

I live next to a river and the humidity & temerature is up & down.

I,m think of closing my loft and changing my roof to clear plastic so i can get the sun shine in.

Just trying to get some ideas.

Shaun I would be more concerned about humidity than the sun. When I was in Barnsley my loft faced south so got sun, however on 3 sides it was surrounded by trees and the damp/humidity was very high. Insulation was what I aimed for, though I can not claim to be successful. My opinion is that you can get away with no sunshine providing you can provide the vitamin d the birds need, but if the humidity is up and down it's far more difficult to bring the birds in to form. Perhaps ther are others on the site who have some solutions for high humidity?

i think the loft position can determine what time of the year you want your birds at their best, also the temperature in the loft, i had a freind deceased now , who used a brick garage as a loft , this loft was freezing until june when it warmed up, this lad could score well at the distance with these birds mind you he did set them up well , but he reckoned this was best for late conditioning ,ie june, july
