Last year and the year before we had hardly any birds moulting, this year they were falling to bits, never seen so much feathers.

Could it be something we are all feeding them, treating them with or the bad weather that caused such a heavy moult this year???

i was always brought up in the thinking any bird that cannot moult out could have a problem,i personally would cull any bird in my loft struggling to moult out.

plenty of good food plenty of rest good regular baths and away the go ;D

Also believed pigeons moulted every year, some quicker than others, but still an annual event. If they didn't moult out, I'd be thinking something had gone wrong, but can't see anything wrong with those pigeons in DoveScot's pics.

Was told the secondaries are moulted out every two years. Can anybody confirm that?

Thanks Guys esp Matt and Jimmy,

That was what I was thinking. Interresting subject though!

I know healthy birds moult and it is a very good sign to see plenty of down feathers. As is a good sign that that the birds are eager to bath as mine always are.

Yep I have two cocks paired together and they havent come out of moult as well as the others yet.

It does seem to be that the ones that have had particulary dif races moult through last.
