I've only been racing pigeons for about 18 months. This year i breed 36 young birds, i missed the first 2 races because of work and other commitments, but i was training my birds up to 30 miles so not concerned about missing the 2 races as they were only 49 and 60 miles i entered the next race with 24 young birds i lost 3 but finished 3rd club. since then my young birds have had the sickness and the weather has been that bad i have been reluctent so send them.  I have now stopped them and from doing any more races this year.

My question to anybody out there is do you think that stopping the young birds so early will stop them from doing well as yearlings. and will the distance be a problem because the haven't raced over 70 miles.

Hi,  You did the right thing, it is best doing what is right for YOU,  At least this way you still have a team for next year, and you are not looking at empty pearches every time you go into your loft.

Train them well as yearlings but remember the North and East winds early on in the season.

Hi, I started up last year and had a similar problem, I wanted to race my young birds but they would be my only old birds for next year. I had to stop them before 100 miles or I'd have had none left. This year, I trained them well in the warm April sun but didn't send them until the comeback races in June/July. I only lost one bird in 4 races of 130 miles, and will now have some nice 2 yr olds next season. You have to take it slow when starting, this year I can push my young birds a bit harder and further because I don't need as many old birds. Hope that helps a bit?
