jimmy white Posted November 23, 2007 Report Posted November 23, 2007 we all know that a bird usualy moults all its 10 primary flights in a season , providing its bred at the right time [ i,e not a late bred ] ,,,,but how do they moult their secondries?? they dont moult all secondries , anyone know the sequince of the moulting of these secondries?
Guest Posted November 23, 2007 Report Posted November 23, 2007 As far as I know no exact sequence is followed and varries from bird to bird following no set pattern, not all of them will be replaced even over the full 12 month period,no one seems to know the reason for this

Guest Posted November 24, 2007 Report Posted November 24, 2007 1 secendrie each year at moulting time and they renew the rest at different times through the year

EAGLEOWL Posted November 26, 2007 Report Posted November 26, 2007 http://www.pigeonbasics.com/articles/article47.html a article by guy barrat if it helps
Guest Posted November 26, 2007 Report Posted November 26, 2007 Jimmy, I've asked this one before, Jimmy, but never did get a reply. A Club mate told me that birds don't moult secondaries out annually, like the primaries, he said they are moulted every second year. I've always thought secondary moult started at the one next to P1 and worked in sequence toward the body?
EAGLEOWL Posted November 26, 2007 Report Posted November 26, 2007 not sure mind not what it is now but if i remember steve spinks once wrote a article on this subject many years ago,i could be wrong
Guest Posted November 26, 2007 Report Posted November 26, 2007 Leon Whitney's book 'Keep your pigeons flying'. Page 23, 'Larger feathers of the wing' :- The primaries are replaced starting with 1 and progressing to 10. Secondaries usually moult from the outside inward, i.e., 1 & 10, 2 & 9, 3 & 8, etc.
