i was told a theory a couple of years ago that pigeons as well as other birds & animals pass on more to thier offspring than we think ie they pass on a kind of blueprint map of thier home etc so is this why a bird that has never been trained or raced sold to another part of the country then escapes has been known to return to loft where it was bred,or why a youngster lost off the loft its first time out returns days later, so i was wondering if this could be to do with why the old hands normally recommend to get birds from a top local fancier, could this also have something to do with the endless amount of fanciers who buy new families of birds every year give them 1 season then say theyre rubbish yet if like others if they had given them a couple of years the offspring of the race birds might prove them wrong.just a thought

Don't know about the passing it on theory just maybe the instinct is there and the birds are more intelligent that what we give them credit for.

I once had a cock from a bereavement sale, i had him for a few days before i forgot and let him out, he obviously returned to the empty loft whe he stayed for some weeks before it was removed. He hung about for a couple of days before returning to me! He went on to fly 480 miles with good positions.

once bought a van reet cock from massarella ,he was 2 years old and 3 days later got out of my loft, this bird never looked back but 1 week laterturned up back outside my loft and when opening the loft shot straight in.i trained him to 45 miles and then kept him at home.
