Guest Hjaltland Posted November 21, 2005 Report Posted November 21, 2005 Can anyone help me with this pic... which shows a liberation in Lerwick (UK's most northerly racepoint) sometime in the 1930's. The caption says the race is Lerwick to London. Would this have been the NRCC or what? Which trophy would they have been racing for? Is it still raced for? market_st_3438.jpg

Guest Posted November 22, 2005 Report Posted November 22, 2005 Hjaltland, really like yesteryear photos like this one. Is this street recognisable today ? Is the pier near there and is that a pier barrow that the baskets are on? Wondered why they chose that spot? Liberated birds over and through the houses rather than up or down the street?
Guest Posted November 22, 2005 Report Posted November 22, 2005 THIS MAY HELP THERE IS A PIGEON FANCIER IN LERWICK THATS LOOKS AFTER THE BIRDS AND THE LIB THE SEC OF THE NRCC COULD GIVE HIS NAME AND NUMBER
Guest Hjaltland Posted November 22, 2005 Report Posted November 22, 2005 Bruno, This is the street i lived in as a kid and is fairly recognisable today. I kept pigeons up the road there about 100 yds or so! in the early 1960's The baskets would have been taken here by horse and cart i should think. The hauliers buildings and stables are on the left where the baskets are. Not the best place to lib. but it is the highest part of town The pier is about a mile away and i can only conjecture that there was nowhere sensible to store them at the pier. HC I am that person! LOL
