Guest Paulo Posted October 31, 2006 Report Posted October 31, 2006 What medical supplies do you advise novices to have on hand during the racing season?
Mike Lycett Posted October 31, 2006 Report Posted October 31, 2006 A cracking pair of eyes to watch everything going on & an instinct that you gotta learn to follow. As pigeon men we have nothing else
Guest Paulo Posted October 31, 2006 Report Posted October 31, 2006 Thats the number one thing but what sort of things do you have on standby in case of problems. Obviousy preventation is better than cure but its still wise to have some treatments to hand i.e. the obvious ones are:- Canker Cocci Worms etc do you guys get stuff on hand in case a bird gets smashed up like an injury hammock etc Just after ideas to help all the novices on here.
Mike Lycett Posted October 31, 2006 Report Posted October 31, 2006 No, we have no splints, hammocks or anything like that.. Canker, Cocci & Worms, good husbandry & you're more than half way home
Guest Posted October 31, 2006 Report Posted October 31, 2006 Nurture your peigeons natural immune system from birth and you won't need the snake oil stuff
square_peg Posted October 31, 2006 Report Posted October 31, 2006 THINK MY SON HAS BIGGEST MEDICINE CABINET OUT THERE ITS TALL BLACK IN COLOUR OH AND IT HAS WHEELS :X
snowy Posted November 5, 2006 Report Posted November 5, 2006 A cracking pair of eyes to watch everything going on & an instinct that you gotta learn to follow. As pigeon men we have nothing else like mike said, observation is the best & keep everything 100% clean & DRY, & i have found that garlic water once a week keeps most nasties away. so always keep a fresh garlic bulb available. regards
Guest Posted October 26, 2007 Report Posted October 26, 2007 I know this is an old thread, but it does take me back to the time I started up again. Most of my early problems were injuries, and my complaint at that time was how little there was on sale in the pigeon press that could be used to help a bird that had been 'hawked' , or hit something and broken a leg for example. How do you patch them up, or set a broken leg etc? If you know the basic rules, you can improvise: any wound must be cleaned then sealed with something - to stop infection getting a chance to take hold. So you are basically talking about soap and lukewarm water, an antiseptic, a healing cream, [members here use Savlon cream and they do an antiseptic spray too.] Then simply let the bird rest and let nature take its course. Any vet will tell you that compared to mammals, birds heal very quickly. Setting the birds leg is a bit controversial - in that there are different schools of thought - splint, don't splint, your choice. Its a matter of first making sure the broken ends are properly aligned, then either leaving it to heal, or putting a splint on, something like matchsticks minus the fiery bit and tape of some sort. Don't bind too tightly tho, because the break swells to twice the size of the leg during healing. Again its down to pure rest and nature, the bird will hold the foot off the floor and after about 7 days will again start to put weight on it, another 7 days limping and maybe 10-14 days after that walking quite the thing. Know your limits - a broken wing is a vet job - bird will be confined to a box for 3 weeks- but depending on what's broken it will probably fly again, tho whether it will race again is another story. And always keep a spare nestbox for sick or injured birds. Its the 1st rule - you keep these apart from the others, and tend to sick birds last after you have seen to your other birds - and a spare box is the best place to do it. And if you have a sick bird in the loft, clean & spray everything you use to look after the birds with a disinfectant like Virkon. And wash your hands after you've tended the bird and before you do anything else.
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted October 26, 2007 Report Posted October 26, 2007 GARLIC, CIDER VINEGAR ARE TWO OF THE BEST THINGS AND CAN'T BE CLASSED AS A MEDICINE AS SUCH, BUT WOULD ADVOCATE TO ANYBODY STARTING UP TO HAVE THESE ON HAND, AS THEY ARE BETTER THAN A HOST OF MEDICINES THAT WILL ONLY DO THE SAME JOB BUT EMPTY YOUR POCKET FASTER

Guest Posted November 20, 2007 Report Posted November 20, 2007 if u dont treat these days id say ur looking at trouble, times when fanciers would leave the bugs/viruses to take their course are now outdated and i personally believe irresponsible. i used to have a chuckle at some fanciers who would say dont treat ur birds let the illness take its course...then they would be the 1st ones who would rush off to the docs when they had a runny nose lol.

Guest Posted November 20, 2007 Report Posted November 20, 2007 I've found that you can get this purple antisepic spray for horses and white wound powder that heals pigeons that have hit the wires or being hawked up atreat Was horse products that I used, couldn't get anything else, an antiseptic liquid which I diluted or used neat, depending on injury, and a thick paste [which stank] to seal the wound. Had to be careful with the paste cos it stained / destroyed feathers around the wound.
