NATIONAL HOMING UNION

Ameeting of the Council was held in Brimingham on Nov. 11th An improvement in the method of transferring rings was promised. A "storm in a teacup" was raised by MR.A.Rutherford,who protested against the Finance committee's method in making recommendations to the council.Westmorland and Cumberland centre applied for a grant. The Committee recommended that this centre should wait until the end of the season to see how finances stood and then to make another application.MR.Rutherford thought the matter ought to have been referred to the council earlier. As a result it was agreed that resolutions and recommendation of the Finance committee meetings held previous to council meetings should be referred to the council on the following day.Suggested alterations and amendments to certain rules were read. One is to be submitted to the solicitor again, after which a draft of the revised rules is to be sent to centres for discussion.

Post-War Committee

MR.Selby Thomas said that the original recommendation of the committee, together with replies from centres, would be printed for circulation to centres.

In the matter of lofts, a majority thought it was the Union's job to approach local authorities at once for permission to erect lofts. Others argued that local councils and surveyors should be approached by fanciers, who knew what they wanted. Ring licences for 1945 were granted. When MR.S.Sidebottom read a letter from the Western Centre protesting against the cut in N.P.S. rations, and it was suggested that the letter be referred to the N.P.S. Committee, MR. A. Rutherford was energetic in his protests. He hoped that the council would take steps to help the fancier. MR. Barrett explained that it was a Ministry of Food recommendation to cut rations, owing to shortage, but MR. Rutherford asked why didn't the council act as a body and persist with its claim? He also said that fanciers had had a rew deal considering they had been so generous to the government with their services and pigeons. It was agreed finally that the secretary write in the council's name to the Ministry of Food.

The appeal of Tasker and son against a decision of the Yorkshire Centre was interesting. The case involved the calculation to decimal place of the variation of a clock (to decide the winner). It was contended that it was not necessary to go to decimal point in that calculation. The contention was effective and the appeal allowed.

The next meeting will be held in blackpool on jan 20th 1945.

N.U.R.P. 37 'Mercury' the holder of one of the 31 Dickin Medals awarded to racing pigeons during the 1939-45 war.

The fact that the 53 Dickin medals awarded for animal bravery during the war, 31 of them were presented to pigeons, only goes to reinforce the affinity between man and pigeon, anaffinity instigated by noah when he used his dove to obtain confirmation of the subsidence of the Great Flood.

The present generation of pigeon keepers who do not know and cannot envisage the tragedy of war, have been able to enjoy their sport due to the sacrifices made by both men and bird so many years ago. The debt can never be repaid. The most fitting tribute we all can give is to ensure that their deeds are never forgotten.
