Don't wish to confuse you any further, but for a simple rule of thumb you could say inbreeding means that there is one common ancestor on both sides of the young pigeon's pedigree. 'Both its mum and dad go back to the same pigeon'.

 

Line breeding means breeding back to one particular ancestor, be it a cock or a hen, and it usually means the ancestor appears several times in the young pigeon's pedigree, but on one sde only. 'Only mum but not dad [or vice versa) go back to that pigeon'.

 

I don't think the average fancier gives any thought to genetics when breeding racing pigeons. The muliple factors that go into breeding a champion racing pigeons appear a lot more complex than for example. breeding for particular colours or patterns. You generally know beforehand what colour your youngsters will be, but never their racing ability.
