Guest SPORTKA Posted March 9, 2008 Report Posted March 9, 2008 Just a thought but as a newcomer to the sport as well as all the jargon iv got to learn such as Feds, combines, club, etc im finding it quite difficult to see how some of the names given to certain colours are arrived at, for example a GAY PIED About the only two I know for sure are dk chq and light chq, and thats only cos iv got one of each lol, is there an easy way to tell whats what ? if not how about one of the more experienced amoungst us doing some sort of reference chart for the dummies like me, THANX IN ADVANCE Chris
pjc Posted March 9, 2008 Report Posted March 9, 2008 the main colours are blue bar, blue cheq, red cheq and mealy. Blue bar is the same colour as your cheq but wont have the chequering on the wings, it will be plain and have 2 black bars accross the wing, Red cheques are a brown red colour and mealys are a pinky colour with red/brown bars. Sorry a very basic description!
Castleview Posted March 9, 2008 Report Posted March 9, 2008 I've added some colours for you just to give you an idea, which you probably already know. But below is a Red Cheq, Grizzle, Gay Pied or as I like to term Cheq Gay Pied, Slate W/F (not really a blue nor a chequer) and a Mealy
Guest spin cycle Posted March 9, 2008 Report Posted March 9, 2008 don't worry about it to much. i was exactly the same then one day it just 'clicked' and made sense. other fanciers will help you.the main thing is the description bears relation to race entry sheet.
Guest IB Posted March 9, 2008 Report Posted March 9, 2008 Sorry to disagree, but 'bother with colours' never seems to go away. In 'the old days' they were called light chequers and dark chequers. I think today they are called blue chequers and dark chequers? Still have bother deciding whether some birds are (blue) chequers or dark (black) chequers. Seems a shame just to call them chequers, bit of a cop-out on my part I think. Though I now have less bother with reds and strawberry mealies? Because I don't have any any more, so can't confuse them.
Guest scoobybob Posted March 9, 2008 Report Posted March 9, 2008 I have to get use to all these different colours now a days… GAY PIED that was a dark chequer Pied in my day… and never had blue chequers only light or dark chequers. I had quite a few red/strawberry/yellow mealies but these were what we called bronze mealies.. Grizzels were only a tipplers colour see my post . http://www.pigeonbasics.com/forum/blah/m-1205093825/ Seems I have to learn all my colours again…

You aren't alone in not knowing all there is to know about colours. At least there won't be anybody rippin into you here, just ask and somebody will come up with the answer, usually with a pic or two to go with it.
