Guest mikkey Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 im a novice when it comes to keeping pigeons, ive only had them since september last year and boy have i made some mistakes ive lost a few and the twatting hawk has had its fair share but i just spotted some crows going crazy in my neighbours garden ,there was the hawk eating my favourite bird, its lucky i was shaking with anger because i missed the shot, im thinking of packing in now because im really pissed off and its not really worth the hassle of getting birds looking nice to feed to the hawks :-/ :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( sorry about the swearing but im totally *expletive removed* off
gangster Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 i hope you re consider ive recently lost good stock to a cat and felt the same but dont give up ....your luck will change...
Whats it called Cumbernauld Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 Sorry to here this mate stick with it cant get any worse, maybe should not say that all the best and good luck mate.looking for any advice pm me glad to help. Rab Smith
pjc Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 Unfortunatly thats life! Pigeon racing is only going to get harder until raptors are controlled, and that is unlikely to happen any time soon! We have to breed twice as many as we want to just to make sure we have some left at the end of the season and the hawks are fed!

Pigeon racing is only going to get harder until raptors are controlled, and that is unlikely to happen any time soon! We have to breed twice as many as we want to just to make sure we have some left at the end of the season and the hawks are fed! unfortunately i dont have the room for a large loft so therefore i cant keep too many birds, im keeping rollers at the moment ,maybe i need something faster???? the problem with having a small flock is you feel it more when a bird gets killed or goes missing, so i just dont seem to be able to get a decent amount of birds established, that was my 8th bird killed in 6 months but as you say (THATS LIFE) or death in the pigeons case.
bewted Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 mikkey,,,,rollers will be caught by hawks as they are a much slower bird in the sky, that is why hawk people buy the rollers and such like from markets to train there hawks with !!!! that is i fact !!!
pjc Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 there are faster breeds but the birds do get street wise to the hawks
Guest REDFOXKRAUTHS Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 dont jack it in i thought that i kept my birds in for a while and the problems arent so bad now * touch wood )
Guest spin cycle Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 i've lost 2 in ten days. i've given up 'open hole' , started regimented exercise (as racing soon anyway). doesn't help with ybs though.....just got to 'play it by ear' . i have rooks that nest in my chimney hoping these will help as i've not had trouble 'til now (but hawks have been about). however my luck may have run out. hang on in there the crows may be your friends encourage them....perhaps ?

I have recently found my old egg collection from all those years ago, up in the attic. Anybody interested? EXCEPTIONAL COLLECTION.
THE FIFER Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 yes most likely carrion crows, they are the ones with the long black beaks
PigeonClarke Posted March 14, 2008 Report Posted March 14, 2008 Why not try fancy pigeons if you're having trouble with a hawk?

We have to breed twice as many as we want to just to make sure we have some left at the end of the season and the hawks are fed! Cant for the life of me see logic in above, our racing pigeons are really responsible for the explosion of predators on an ongoing basis, its due to our food packages /birds being presented when needed most, their breedind season/racing season, now take away or limit this scource of food, this would have an effect on raptor population, but to produce more to feed more, eventually creates even more problems.

Guest mikkey Posted March 14, 2008 Report Posted March 14, 2008 Why not try fancy pigeons if you're having trouble with a hawk? by fancy pigeons do you mean show pigeons that wont be let out ? now i agree that would solve the problem of my birds getting hawked but in my opinion theres nothing better than to see your birds out flying and if i cant let them out theres not much point in having them, ive had a look on your web site nice looking birds by the way
bewted Posted March 14, 2008 Report Posted March 14, 2008 you could try egyptian or syrian swifts and see how fast they go !!!! like rockets !!!
cushy doo Posted March 14, 2008 Report Posted March 14, 2008 im a novice when it comes to keeping pigeons, ive only had them since september last year and boy have i made some mistakes ive lost a few and the twatting hawk has had its fair share but i just spotted some crows going crazy in my neighbours garden ,there was the hawk eating my favourite bird, its lucky i was shaking with anger because i missed the shot, im thinking of packing in now because im really pissed off and its not really worth the hassle of getting birds looking nice to feed to the hawks :-/ :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( sorry about the swearing but im totally *expletive removed* off what were you trying to shoot ?? hope it wasnt a protected bird of prey??
Guest IB Posted March 14, 2008 Report Posted March 14, 2008 Picked up 2 things:- There was a thread about Oriental Flying Rollers that are just too fast for Hawks, they're kept to prevent attacks on the loft because hawks soon learn they can't catch them, so they steer clear. Encourage the crows, they mob hawks and chase them away. Other wild birds take their cue from this and take to the air, getting above the hawk and so out of danger. Your own birds will take their cue from this too.
Guest IB Posted March 14, 2008 Report Posted March 14, 2008 Landward, BBC2 Scotland 7pm tonight led with a raptor piece. Very balanced, showed both sides of the coin: gamekeeper talked about the devastation raptors caused to ground nesting birds - not just game birds, but wild birds in general, and time for Government to have a rethink, rapror numbers are increasing and time to give the other birds a chance, an equal chance. Presenter invited comments and email address is: Landward@bbc.co.uk
