sammy Posted March 27, 2008 Report Posted March 27, 2008 What should i do 1 of my pairs has laid there 2nd clutch on loft floor should i put it in the bowl in there box and lock them in or bin it and lock them in any advice y not let them sit on them were they are ,if you move them into the nest box its more likely they will just abandon them
Guest chrisss Posted March 27, 2008 Report Posted March 27, 2008 y not let them sit on them were they are ,if you move them into the nest box its more likely they will just abandon them i would tend to agree however if they don;t have a nestbowl on the floor you will have to watch the ybs legs [they can get splayed out]
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted March 28, 2008 Report Posted March 28, 2008 i would tend to agree however if they don;t have a nestbowl on the floor you will have to watch the ybs legs [they can get splayed out] When this hapens with me i just leave them but put plenty nesting material round about them, just build it up for them slowly till they have a big nest , always worked with no problems with youngsters
pjc Posted March 28, 2008 Report Posted March 28, 2008 they tend to lay on the floor when they have 2 young in the nest bowl and there isn't room for the next clutch. Stock nest boxes need plenty of room so that when the first yb's are arround 12 days old you can put a 2nd nest bowl in the box for the next round. Personaly i don't like them nesting onthe floor as the cockbird can start to dominate the space and be a pain. Phil
Guest Hjaltland Posted March 28, 2008 Report Posted March 28, 2008 I once tried shifting the eggs off the floor back into the original nest box, then locked the hen in overnight and she took to the eggs OK. I'm not saying it will always work, it'll depend on the will power and intelligence of the birds involved I guess, and how far away the nest box is from the floor 'nest' It is fine to get them off the floor as you end up with fights over the floor space - damaged eggs, hurt youngsters etc. as pjc says.
phelo84 Posted March 28, 2008 Author Report Posted March 28, 2008 thank you all i have just put5 them in the nest box bowl there was only 1 youngster from last clutch and he is 26 days old so i have removed it from box and locked both hen and cock in will have to wait an see what happens
Peckedhen Posted March 28, 2008 Report Posted March 28, 2008 Have they laid the second egg yet? If you move them after the first egg and lock them in the hen will usually lay the the second egg in the bowl and then they'll sit them. I haven't had any success at moving two eggs even a few inches and they've come off them. This year, for the first time, two of my pairs laid in the same bowl as the youngsters, this was despite there being a second bowl in the nest box for them! I tried moving the babies over into the other bowl but they kept going back in with the eggs! The eggs would have got broken so the babies had to go on the loft floor! If you do put babies down on the floor always put down as many as you can at once. That way the cocks don't knock them about.
Guest IB Posted March 28, 2008 Report Posted March 28, 2008 I think it is a mistake to try and rear youngsters in a nest on the floor - they are vulnerable to any marauding cock. Long time ago now, but the only pair I had do it, youngsters got scalped. Never again. If they do lay on the floor best to catch them after the 1st egg, take it away and on the next again day when the hen is due to lay her 2nd, lock both cock and hen in the box with therr 1st egg in the bowl.
doo Posted March 28, 2008 Report Posted March 28, 2008 I remember years ago a lad in Kilmarnock had his hut roof blown off, & had too basket his very small team of birds, two pair were sitting eggs when this happened, he moved the eggs & pairs into two seperate baskets & they sat the eggs in the baskets ...once the loft was fixed he put the baskets in the loft till they had hatched & weaned....now that's what I call basket training ....

I think they come on quicker this way. :-/ :-/

On average now, how long does it take for your birds to go down on their next round of eggs etc. In my area as such, if they have not laid by 15 days at the latest, I tend to look at them very suspiciously I'm afraid. Enjoy.
pjc Posted March 29, 2008 Report Posted March 29, 2008 Some people I know put all there youngsters on the floor at 15 days, all the hens feed anything thats asking and will all lay again in there boxes as the bowls are empty and can be cleaned/replaced.
