Castleview Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 Hi All, I've been thinking about the design of my new pigeon loft over the last few days. At the moment I have an 8 x 5 Long Apex Shed. Now the thing that I have been thinking about is when I get some 'stock' pigeons to begin breeding with I will have to keep going in and personally putting them in the aviary that I am building every time I want to loose the young birds out and after a while that will be a pain in the bum. I was thinking of buying a set of four widowhood nest boxes and placing them at the far end of the shed (where the aviary will be) and putting a partition in so that I can loose any birds that are broke out of the door and the stock are locked up nicely and safe from escape. The sizes I was thinking of splitting the shed were 2.5ft (this is a width of a window that is installed in the shed) which is equal to the size of a 30" Widowhood Box, and the rest of it for perches. Take into account that 8 Birds would occupy the 2.5ft x 5ft area. I'd like to take it further but it would put any partition across the second window, as you can see from the photo. Would those dimensions be too small for 8 Pigeons (4 Pairs). I could reduce them to 3 pairs and block of a box. These 8 Pigeons would have a 4ft aviary to 'play' in so theoretically the shed would be 10ft. The shed has yet to be worked on. Concentrating on the fiance's budgies at the minute. Originally I was going to have just 8 Boxes with a partition in between the door and first window, for safety, but what about the YB's? I gotta keep getting the birds locked up while I loose the YB's out. Next year I'm getting a shed for the YB's, but for now I'm not planning on breeding 50 YBS, only about 8 YBS. I suppose I could split the shed into 4ft either side and make the first window into two seperate trapping windows with a landing platform and bobwires. Mmmm...
Castleview Posted March 17, 2008 Author Report Posted March 17, 2008 I've decided to put the partition by the door making a 5ft x 5ft area, which will eventually have two sets of 4 widowhood nest boxes installed, but for now I'm just installing the perches until I add the boxes.

pjc Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 If that is glass in the windows get rid of it! The birds are likely to fly at it when its clear, better putting twin wall in the front or better still put a small flight on the front for the birds to come up into and have a look out. You also need to get some ventilation in there, louvers at the bottom from and an air gap top rear to allow the air to flow freely. Phil
Castleview Posted March 22, 2008 Author Report Posted March 22, 2008 do you live by kates hill mate ? Yeah, near enough. About 2 Miles. Got a great view of Dudley Castle. If that is glass in the windows get rid of it! You also need to get some ventilation in there, louvers at the bottom from and an air gap top rear to allow the air to flow freely. The glass is gone Phil. Cheap it was, broke in my hands (Had gloves on) Made some doors with dowelling. I'll post an image tomorrow. Got to put some ventilation in, got the vents already. Will do that as soon as I've put the aviary up on the side. I've considered all of this and will get around to it over the next few days
Castleview Posted March 24, 2008 Author Report Posted March 24, 2008 Here's how my loft looks now from the outside. Made the dowelling windows myself. The paneled area drops down to a landing board and the birds can enter via bob wires.I installed the aviary on the side today. Tomorrow (weather permitting) i will put an access hole into the aviary then add the vents at the front and rear.
Whats it called Cumbernauld Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 You heading in the right direction now mate, well done. Going to be a few weeks behind you, but will get there Rab Smith
Back garden fancier Posted March 25, 2008 Report Posted March 25, 2008 I've had a loft the same size for the past thre years, only just extended it by 6 foot. I had it divided into two sections one with perches and one with nest boxes. No stock birds, with so few they all have to fly ! You can still compete, put the hens in with the young birds and race the cocks widowhood or fly ntural. Both ways work. Main thing is with a small set up, don't think you can enter every race. Plan your season and stick to your plan !

I'm going to breed 16 a year when all boxes are full and split into two teams of 8. at the end of the year I will pick the best and sell the rest. This should keep my teams small and save on garden space too. ;D
Back garden fancier Posted March 25, 2008 Report Posted March 25, 2008 I have six pair of old birds and 12 youngsters. believe me you won't have any left to sell !!

doo Posted March 26, 2008 Report Posted March 26, 2008 SO YOU WILL SELL THE RUBBISH THEN ? If they are tested well there will be no rubbish left
Castleview Posted March 26, 2008 Author Report Posted March 26, 2008 Everyone picks there best and sells the ones they don't want, if they don't sell then it's the bin. I won't breed of rubbish, so I won't sell rubbish all will be quality birds. If nobody wants them, like I said theres the alternative.
Whats it called Cumbernauld Posted March 26, 2008 Report Posted March 26, 2008 H i , Just to let you see before works start,if i ever get round to it, still very cold up this way. Timber arriving next week will keep you posted. Cheers Rab Smith
