Hi

Thanks for the info.

I've had a search for the National Union of Racing Pigeons but have turned nothing up.

The "BS" bit is the first two letters before the corrosion starts. At the end of the crroded part are the numbers 53 or possibly 55, it's very worn and dificult to tell.

The ring is Aliminium with a knurled border.

I uneartheed the ring still around the leg bone but there we're no other bones nearby. It was quite an endering find, hence my (probably overly optimistic) desire to at least try to trace the bird.

the "BS"  letters could be the clubs initials or area code,,,,,,and the ""53" or "55" maybe is the end of the numbers eg ; NURP 21 BS 0053   OR    NURP 21 BS 0055

HOPE THAT MAY HELP YOU A BIT !!

if that was a mint ring and i had the money i would of offered to purchase it the bs will stand for the club or area it may well of been 3 letters like my all club was SAB for St Austell and St Blazy, rare ring indeed!!

Once again .. thanks to all for the fab info.

REDFOXKRAUTHS : So... what would a mint ring like this be worth?

Please excuse my lack of knowledge. My only real experience with pigeons is wiping the evidence of their visits from my car.

Q: If a person keeping pigeons has a bird die in them do they usually remove the ring before disposing of the body or is it usually left on?

i think it was about  1960 that the union stopt r.p. and b.h.w.selling rings the leters were

town and club and union took over selling all rings just with one leter

Great information.

Thanks all.

I had posted this Q on another form that's turned up some information you might like to see http://www.pigeon-chat.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=16339

Back to the subject of doisposing of pigeons that have passed on: The reason I ask if the ring is usualy removed from dead birds is that I'd like to know if there was a pigeon loft in my house. If the rings are removed then this bird probably just met it's maker at the paws of a cat.. or the like. If not than my little patch of garden (now under my cucumbers) could be a pegeon grave yard.
