hab Posted August 16, 2008 Report Posted August 16, 2008 I bumped into this website while desperately seeking help for an injured racer. I am in the US. I know nothing about birds. This pigeon has a severe injury, the scalp has peeled away and is covering his eye, leaving exposed bone. He is confused but up and moving. I have no idea what to do... Please help!
Peckedhen Posted August 16, 2008 Report Posted August 16, 2008 Hi Hab , thank you for caring for this bird. I don;t have the knowledge to help. There are a lot of American rehabbers on this site who will be able to advise you. Try here: http://www.pigeons.biz/forums/index.php

Think you have chosen the correct sight as there are plenty people on here that will help you out. I would clean the wound just as you would for a human with any sort of medicated cleanser making sure you get it nice and clean. Then I would replace the skin flap and if it does not stay in place think of something you can safely use to keep it there, maybe a small thin strip of sticky plaster. As for the bird just supply it with accesible water and some type of seed. Rice would do just now if you don't have anything else. Big thank you for taking the trouble to help this poor unfortunate little creature. Would be better if you posted this as a new thread as well. Take care and good luck.
hab Posted August 16, 2008 Author Report Posted August 16, 2008 Thank you so much for the advice. My husband, a nurse, and I have irrigated the wound with sterile saline and applied antibacterial ointment. Hubby tried to push the skin flap back but it appears that the skin has bunched up because much of the scalp is missing. I'm now thinking maybe a bird of prey snatched him but didn't finish the job. Bird is eating well and is quiet but alert. We will continue cleaning him up and hope for the best. Thank you!

Sounds like the wee bird is in good hands. Good luck and let us know how it turns out. Sorry Eastcoaster but at least this gets you to the top of the list for a wee while.(happy_gangsta)
jimbobboy Posted August 17, 2008 Report Posted August 17, 2008 Hab: Where are you located in the US? The bird may have gotten scalped on a high tension wire that sits on top of those high voltage transmission wires that run state to state!!! As one person said maybe try small butterfly strips to hold in place!!!! Bird should recover but will take awhile!!! Does it have a band on leg? If yes what does it say? Will get back to you jimbobboy USA
