my sons are intrested in racing pigeons but have had their duck knocked off this season after a disapointing season. we first got the birds back in november after my dad died but both old birds and the young from them havent produced the goods how can anyone give us any tips

Is it down to the birds or your loft/management!

Get your system right first, if your systems correct and you are consistanly a few minutes behind the winners then look at getting better birds.

Average birds will still perform if the system/conditions are right.

Give us a breakdown of your loft, birds, feeding methods, food fed etc etc

This way members maybe able to point you in the right direction.

am i missing something here,,,,you only got the pigeons last november and yet your starting a pigeon recovery business,,,the way it was explained in your pigeon recovery was that you were flyers, meaning i thought you were experienced flyers and knew how to look after pigeons ?  not meaning to knock you, but, are you trying to run before you can walk ?

also your statement above says your sons are interested in racing pigeons,,,,,but,,,you dont say you are interested !!!!!!!  i am just curious and dont want to fall out with any one over this please !!!

as a former novice my advice (ob) would be to do the 'basics' well. health and fitness...get them fit around loft before training...don't worry about motivation as hopefully 1 or 2 will be self motivated each week. health wise pay particular attention to droppings and throats (particularly if not excersising well). JMO and good luck.

Firstly you need to answer the following questions?

1.By disappointing what do you mean? I take it the birds haven't won any positions in the club. That knocks your end in a bit but you have to look at the big picture. Your flying against established flyers who have experienced teams of old birds. If your yearlings are just a few minutes behind every week and your getting good returns your doing well for a novice and don’t let anyone persuade you otherwise. If however your 15 minutes behind every week and loosing birds your doing something wrong.

2.What systems are you flying? I.e. natural for the OB’s or widowhood or              roundabout? Are you YB’s on natural or darkness? Natural YB’s will only get the first 4 races out of them so they are competive. Darkness come much better.

3.What are you feeding? Once you master the feeding your half way there. It’s the hardest thing to master but once you do it it’s the thing that wins.

4.How much exercise and training are you giving?

5.What’s your heath programme healthy birds are a must to win.

6.Where did you get your birds from? I’m always against blaming the birds for not winning but good birds are hard to come by and you might simply have crap birds! As my hero Ad Shaerlackens says “good pigeons are the most important factor’’ it’s like trying to win the derby with a donkey. Forget all these expensive studs with their promises of winners etc etc. Go and see someone who is a top fancier and has birds that are winning. Not someone in your club as they are in competion with you they’ll sell you crap. Someone in the same fed is probably ok as you are a novice and won’t be a danger man to them. If he’s a proper fancier he’ll give you advice to go with the birds as well.

Above all don’t give up its easy to get disheartened and give up but if you put the graft in and don’t give up and learn how your birds tick you’ll win in the end. I started off a raw novice like you last year with YB’s and had a crap first season. I had the young birds fit and healthy but I didn’t know enough about darkness etc and the birds came well the first few races winning a fourth club but after that they couldn’t compete with the darkies and were a mile behind.

I was gutted as I had put a ton of work and cash in and won sweet FA in real terms. However on the plus side I had had good returns and had at least 1 place card. Then I had my first season with the old birds this year and despite only having a few birds on natural I’ve done my best to compete and whilst not winning everything in front of me I’ve learnt about the birds got the feeding right learned by my mistakes and got a few wins. Had YB’s on the dark as well for the first time and they have come well getting chalks as well.

So don’t give up tell us what your doing and we’ll try and advise. Also pigeon videos and books are great things you have to find a system that suits you but videos and books can teach you a lot. Boddy and Ridewood are doing pigeon videos for a fiver a piece at the minute I’ve ordered:-

Widowhood with Hens 'The Roundabout Tape' Geoff Kirkland

Dean Pallat Widowhood

Simply The Best No 7 Barry MacNicolas Systems

Natural Winning Ways How to Race the Natural System

I’ve ordered all these cause even through I’ve won with my natural pigeons I feel widowhood would give the extra edge I need for the sprint races. Plus to be honest I enjoy watching videos and reading books. Pigeons are an interesting hobby and no one I don’t care if they are the top flier in the fed or amal knows everything about the pigeons and how to win. Once you start thinking you know it all and have it cracked is the day you’ll be at the bottom of the scoresheet!!!!

as others have pointed out conny, uve just started and expect to win ?..uve got a lot to learn about pigeon flying.just when u think uve got it ...it s got a habit of kicking u in the teeth.

dont expect miracles.would u expect to win a formula one race because uve had the car for under 12months?

keep asking questions and learn from ur mistakes...if u gain any cards in ur 1st season all the good ..but dont be disheartened if ur behind...the ones ur flying against have experience which is invaluble.
