Hope you dont mind mw jumping on your thread WICC

What If? what if we changed the whole way we race young birds the way we know it. What if the highest velocity counted for nothing. What if the velocity was worked out not on your first pigeon home but your last. What if you don’t get 100% returns? simple, you're out of the race. What if it were to be made a minimum of 10 birds per member, no advantage to be gained in sending more, in fact it would be a disadvantage to do so.

Emphasis has to be put on getting teams home, not getting one pigeon home out of a team to determine the result.

I dont think for one minute this is the answer but I feel it would take something as radical as this to buck the trend.

i think this is a good idea....but perhaps modify the velocity depending on what % you had home at clocking. eg you send 10, your 1st bird does 1400ypm but you only have 7 back so you get 70% of that vel. 980. no-one in my club has had 100% returns yb wise all season ( at clocking)

is it not a fact that birds of all ages are getting lost and that young bird numbers are higher because the higher numbers sent

what i have noticed and to me is a big worry is that very few make it back home i also think that the young bird & old bird racing starts to early

Tom,

This is a good point. We do start to early, you could say this is due to the lack of time old birds racing, nationals, then young birds.

I would argue whatever we do it should be all over in 8/9 weeks, and any age racing would help this.

In addition to this the numbers going on the same flght path should increase, which should help returns.

We have to keep an open mind in order to find answers

dont you think if they are not prepared to move the start dates of the young bird season there should be a couple of extra races at the end

this i think would help the fanciers who have been hit with illness to get a race without having to rush their youngsters nowing that these races would be an option to them

Yes this is true. However a change to the structure of how we race is needed.

This could be done with say 50 fanciers commiting to the future of our sport in order to experiment, with what we do and when we do it.

It would allow us to try at least and identify some things which will help improve the way we race and hopfully the returns.

Though i do have some reservations about one loft racing, they could be used for this purpose.
