Guest IB Posted April 17, 2008 Report Posted April 17, 2008 I took 16 very well trained birds some have been raced and i only got 8 back, from 20 miles, if and when they come back will they be ok to send on friday for a 58 mile race???? Ben I think it will depend on each bird's condition when they turn up, Ben. I don't train beyond Wednesday, if they make a mistake and come home next day, they can be rested and go away Friday. If they make a mistake Thursday and sleep out, in my opinion there's less chance of their being right for Friday night. I had 3 missing last night, 2 were there first thing this morning, both are uninjured and not flown out, so I could send them this weekend if I wanted to. Two questions I'll be asking myself tomorrow: is the bird fit? and is it ready for racing? I need to get a yes to both questions. I think mine are fit, but I don't think the majority are ready yet, and given the weather forecast, most will be kept at home, tho maybe get 'extra' training Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

timbarra Posted April 17, 2008 Report Posted April 17, 2008 Ben , the best thing to do is take your time, training is not all about getting them fit, its about confidence and putting your candidates in the strongest and best frame of mind, you see they have had a confidence knock now, so some short tosses to reasure them is better than entering them into the race, once confidence is restored from one point of training , then move them to another a bit further, then your birds will feel confident in every aspect they need to be. hope this helps bud. spencer
Back garden fancier Posted April 17, 2008 Report Posted April 17, 2008 Very true, training is not to get the birds fit. They should do that around home. Training is to teach them to come straight home and give them the confidence to fly alone if necessary.
