ruth Posted April 30, 2008 Report Posted April 30, 2008 Hi there, i have been thinking about getting some racing pigeons and would like a bit of advice please. I have been offered a few older birds to start off with but i am worried when let out they will fly back to where they have come from. Is there a certain amount of time to keep them in? also how do you get them to come back when let out for excersise flight?
Guest shadow Posted April 30, 2008 Report Posted April 30, 2008 they will certainly go back to their old loft
pjc Posted April 30, 2008 Report Posted April 30, 2008 there is a thread about breaking birds to a new loft http://forum.pigeonbasics.com/m-1209386029/s-new/#num21 Personally if you are starting from scratch you maybe better off getting some youngbirds that you can let out and if you have the room have the offered oldbirds but keep them in and use them to breed from. jimmy white Posted April 30, 2008 Report Posted April 30, 2008 once theve settled , ie mated and sitting and had a chance to see outside ,maybe with a makeshift aviary , that you can take down when their homing ,, theres a chance theyll stay, but they never forget their old loft ?? a lot easier with 3 to 4 week babies

I may have some pairs you can have, you can take a round of young from them, if they stay you keep them if not then you have the young at least, you could be doing us both a favour, they are decent birds and proven breeders. Valiant may verify the quality of young they produce Where are you from?

Forget getting older birds at this time of year, go to a fancier local to you & ask him/her if they could breed you some yb's ....you will have no probs settling these. Most fanciers are finished breeding now & would be only too happy to help a new starter
