OLDYELLOW Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 Webmaster December 23, 2008, 3:02am Report to Moderator Administrator Posts: 2,017 Gender: Male Location: St Andrews, Fife Theoretically I could read anyone's PMs, because they are stored as files on our web server and I have access to the server. But first of all, I dont and wont (unless I have no other option as described by other posters). There is no way for me to access anyone elses PMs through the site, I have access to my own and that is it. Now that said, if I were to PM 'Mr X', he then is quite able to copy that PM and send it to other people without my knowledge. Likewise I would be able to copy and send his PM to other people without his knowledge. I do not advocate this however because I do not think that it is correct to distribute personal communications, I simply wanted to state what is possible.

Webmaster Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 No. Theoretically there is a way that it is possible that I could view anyones PMs. All the forum files are stored on the server, I have access to the server, and could view the files. No-one else could do this, because only I have access to the files on the server. The only reason that I would do this would be if there were some legal or equally serious circumstance where I had no option than to. Regardless of the fact that associating a member name to their member number, and the relevant file on the server wouldnt be the easiest/quickest thing to do. I've seen this question crop up a few times in the past few weeks, I cannot stress enough that when I log in to the forum I only have access to my own PMs (like everyone else). Have a look over my shoulder at Blackpool (if we can get a signal) if you like
Guest Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 thanks oldyellow so can i ask if richard or the mods have ever done that?
Guest Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 i just think pms are very private and should be kept that way
OLDYELLOW Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 Only administators could access the information moderators cant
Webmaster Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 thanks oldyellow so can i ask if richard or the mods have ever done that? Firstly, I'm the only one with that level of access to the server. And nope, to date I've never had reason to do so.

Guest bigda Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 there are people saying there pms went missing on this site any truth in that
weecunny Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 what would give u reason to look into someones pms
Guest Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 what would give u reason to look into someones pms thats what i was thinking
Webmaster Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 there are people saying there pms whent missing on this site any truth in that I've never had that reported to me from the people involved, I have seen one or two posts about something like that though. Without more details of the actual cases I can only come up with the following reason that would be possible. If there is a conflict or other problem when your PM file is being written to by the server the file or parts of the file may be truncated. I've never known this to happen on Pigeonbasics, but I have heard of it happening on other servers, so it is possible. The only other issue with the PM system that I can think of is an issue when two PMs are received at exactly the same time. You see that /m-1231276616/ in the address bar? That is actually an epoch time stamp. If two messages have the same epoch it is possible that they could overlap or overwrite one another. Again this is very rare (messages would have to be received within the same second) and I've never seen an instance of it happening on Pigeonbasics. Both of these things are so rare that the likelyhood of them happening is almost zero, and even if/when they do there may a mechanism that I am not aware that the forum script uses to handle the situation. If you think anything isnt working quite right, just let me know and I'll look into it
