PigeonNewbie Posted November 13, 2008 Report Posted November 13, 2008 Hi everyone! This is my very first post and I'm new to the whole pigeon racing sport and unfortunate for me, never really knew such a thing existed until recently! BUT, I am starting to become very interested very quickly and have been doing my research all over the internet and have been reading info on a few other forums. I'm actually attempting to write a paper for my english class on the sport of pigeon racing, so for you beginner pigeon racers or those of you who are experts and have been doing this for years, if you have just a few minutes to spare, would you mind answering some questions for be below? I'd REALLY appreciate it and any info you can give me would be great!! Thanks so much!! What are some of the first things a beginner pigeon racer needs to know? Where or from whom did you learn some of your first/basic pigeon racing skills from? Where did you find the most useful information [when you were beginning]? (ie internet websites, forums, other expects, pigeon clubs, experience, books) Do you currently subscribe to any pigeon magazines, ezines, or newsletters? Are pigeon racing books outdated, or is the information in there still useful for today's methods? Are there certain training/breeding/racing methods that are most popular? / Used most by pigeon elites? If you were beginning pigeon racing all over again, what important information/techniques/methods do you wish you knew now that you didn't know back then? Do you feel that there is sufficient information on the internet alone that would make it easy for pigeon newcomers to start racing? Where (either online or in print) do you go to find your most trusted information? Is this a place that you frequently come back to? Is this where you go if you have questions or dilemmas? Do you always find the answers there that you're looking for? If there was one thing you wanted to know more about with pigeon training/or racing, what would it be?

Guest Posted November 13, 2008 Report Posted November 13, 2008 there are plenty of sites for all your questions on the net but this site takes a bit of beating for info and the members on here are allways ready to help new starts from birds to clocks to info but at the end of the day experence is what will count in the end but we all need a little help to gather that
Guest IB Posted November 13, 2008 Report Posted November 13, 2008 On the internet-related questions: It is a sad fact that the older age-profile of pigeon fanciers means that users of the internet are in a tiny minority. May not look that way with 4000 members on here, but there are around 150,000 pigeon fanciers in the UK. This is because the sport suffers from the same problem as all participative sports, it is unable to attract new young members in any great numbers and those few it may attract, may not stay for long. Racing pigeons aren't something you can switch off when you become bored with the game. And although the racing season lasts only 4 months in the year, you've still to look after the birds the other 8 months. So learning for me as a youngster was from older more experienced fanciers, question & answer. And of course, trial & error. There are also 2 weeklies which compete for readership: the largest circulation, cheaper and poorer quality British Homing World and Racing Pigeon, better quality but much, much smaller: these have articles covering all aspects of pigeons.. There are few monthly magazines now. Was a member of an e-magazine for one year only, was geared more toward mainland Europe (Belgians & Dutch) with few English articles. There are many books available, from health matters written by vets world-wide, to racing systems, written by fanciers world-wide, luckily all in Englsih, and of course Videos and DVDs.

PigeonTracker Posted November 14, 2008 Report Posted November 14, 2008 My advice would be simple, follow Jimmy's advice as its pretty much spot on and a perfect example of old school knowledge embracing the internet as a tool to enhance his learning. Great post Jimmy, and an even better post by you PigeonNewbie.
