first off, happy easter to every one....

ok.....

i would like to know how you view your birds... i mean, u dont name them right? but how do you care for your birds, to had clean them or bath them? do you show them affection through pruning etc? do you have favourite birds not only winners, but character, or not very good birds that you give special care and attention too?

Naming birds -

Some people do, i did last year with a few but in all honesty they have their ring numbers and thats enough - My own view over the last few months is that naming a bird should be for top performance pigeons or 'pets'

 

It is really up to the individual owner though - Many studs will name all the birds often with a fancy foreign name to help market the bird.

 

Keeping the birds clean/Bath them

 

The birds will generally keep themselves clean if in a good enviroment with good air circulation - Even the birds poo on the floor and in its box doesnt necessarily mean its a dirty loft to the birds - If the loft gets damp or wet and as such the droppings get wet then that is whenthe cleaniness, healthiness and condition of the birds will decrease.

 

To bath the birds you simply put a bath type item, Cat litter tray etc with water in and the birds as a rule should be eager to get in and get thereselves clean.

 

Showing affection -

 

Personally i try to show them enough attention and give enough affection to bond them to the loft and myself and make sure they have a happy home that they want to be in (you wouldnt want to live with a grumpy man who shouts and stomps about, would you?)

 

With regards to affection though with me its a balance as i dont want to get attached to much as its an even bigger sickener when you loose them.

 

Favourite bird

 

I think most will have a favourite bird, its basically just what takes peoples fancy although a winner and good consistent bird is more likely to be a favourite.

I don't name my racers, being pure white they are difficult to recognise unless they are in their nest boxes where I can then see their different characters - those that don't mind me handling their young, those that wing slap and peck at me. I usually stroke the side of their head - some like it, some object. ;D;D!

 

The ones I have named and are especially tame (they fly to me when they see me coming, even right across the field) are my garden fantails - big mistake - the Sparrowhawk has taken two hens within a month. It doesn't do to become too attached, it's always the favourites that seem to 'go'.

i do have names for a few of my birds but as peckedhen says it doesnt pay to become too attached as its always the favourites that seem to go   this year has been a nightmare for me with the hawks and its only gonna get worse year on year      debbie
