cropperchris Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 I'm wondering if I'm feeding my rollers too much as they're not flying much, when I let them out a few may get up but the others are straight back in the loft. Someone has mentioned trying to flag them, would this work? Or I though I could just take them across the field from my house and toss them to get them flying more? I'm not wanting to compete but I would like to see a nice kit of rollers above my house Also I've got a few garden fantails in a different coop but they're out at the same time, will this keep them down? Apologies in advance for all the stupid questions :-/ cheers chris
Merlin Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 Rollers should always be flown on their own, what feed system have you, what type of food are you using
cropperchris Posted January 2, 2009 Author Report Posted January 2, 2009 They're just fed daily on bucktons young bird,no special system,I've been told verse laga is a better quality feed? cheers chris
Merlin Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 For flying, you might be beter off using a Race Bird depurative, how often do you feed them
cropperchris Posted January 2, 2009 Author Report Posted January 2, 2009 I feed them daily in the morning I'd probably be better feeding smaller ammounts more often would I but I work full time, sorry if I'm being a bit thick about all this cheers chris
Merlin Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 You have nothing to apologize or be sorry for Chris, try keep 24 hrs between feeds, and when flying ,observe which bird is first to land on roof, remove it,when leaving out next time make noise 2 x 1 bang on flat board to lift them, see how that goes, keep fantails out of sight when flying rollers
wayne77 Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 Chris the corn shop I mentioned at chirk sells verselle laga there is bloke at grafton I think who keeps team of rollers as i had one in with my racers
cropperchris Posted January 2, 2009 Author Report Posted January 2, 2009 Thanks for that I'm off all weekend so I'l get them out in the morning, should I try flagging them to get them up? I realise its the wrong time of year to start cutting back feed too much now cheers chris
Merlin Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 You are not "cutting" back feed ,you are possibily overfeeding,if you are intending to fly them in morning they should have been fed this morning, but good luck with them anyway.
wayne77 Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 Merlin I have no knowledge of the rollers but I was told that letting them out when just fed can be dangerous as if roll food can choke them :-/ was someone pulling my leg???
Merlin Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 Its a new one on me Wayne, but its best for performance and control when landed if crop is empty.
cropperchris Posted January 2, 2009 Author Report Posted January 2, 2009 Chris the corn shop I mentioned at chirk sells verselle laga there is bloke at grafton I think who keeps team of rollers as i had one in with my racers kennelgate in shrewsbury sell it too although its probably a bit more expensive from there wayne but I've only got 12 pigeons so it shouldn't break the budget cheers chris

chico123 Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 when flying rollers the best thing you can do is keep things simple and regular try flying the same time each day feed after flying and always fly them on an empty crop eg 24 hrs after feeding get them into a regular habit sort out the idle ones and get rid chico
chico123 Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 hi chico here try and fly your rollers the same time each day fly drop feed and rest get them into a habit dont try and fly them two or three times a day just once then sort the idle ones out and get rid you cant beat a regular habit and dont expect rollers to fly for hours chico
cropperchris Posted January 3, 2009 Author Report Posted January 3, 2009 Let the rollers out this morning and kept the fantails in,tapped the top of the loft and while they didn't roll as such they kitted beautifully which is the first time they have 8) So I think I'll start letting them out before feeding and keep the fantails in. Just as an experiment after they'd circled the house for a few minutes I let the fantails out and they were straight back down so hopefully I've solved the problem,I'll let you all know how it goes cheers chris
cropperchris Posted January 3, 2009 Author Report Posted January 3, 2009 Went to kennelgate today too to get some verselle laga but some fella had just been in and bought the last of it so come on own up who was it ;D ;D ;D cheers chris
