Guest marksimpson Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 pair um up then lock um in box let one pair out at time then just allow um to walk out loft with hen they will soon learn were they are would you let them look round via an avairy that you can put in front of doors ?
ChrisMaidment08 Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 that would be good idea me i dont use one but yes as they cant take up if spooked cos thats why you lose most of them when breaking they fly and then head home forgetting hen
Guest marksimpson Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 i ll look after them for u m8 no im trying to brakem out to race this year
ChrisMaidment08 Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 do you usepeanuts to get them used to you????
Guest marksimpson Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 do you usepeanuts to get them used to you???? yes i do use peanuts now and then why?
ChrisMaidment08 Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 cos if cocks get them they know what one is you can sit outside with them and they will walk round happy while you give um one now and again then throw couple in loft so they go in and out after them
pjc Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 Mark, are these birds you have reaced yourself to a previous location or birds from other people? Phil
Guest marksimpson Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 Mark, are these birds you have reaced yourself to a previous location or birds from other people? Phil hi phil they are from a local chap hoo is calling it a day.
pjc Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 how long have you had the birds and how many are you trying to break? Also is there old loft still there?
Guest marksimpson Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 how long have you had the birds and how many are you trying to break? Also is there old loft still there? there is 10 cocks i get them backend of jan and loft will be there but i dont think it will be accecible if they go back as he is moving away to work
pjc Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 Ok, personally then i would try a different way, if the loft is reasonably near you, go get the birds in a basket and liberate them at your loft a few times, when you get the birds let them settle in your loft for a few days, keep them hungry and then let them out. Before you let them out make sure the old loft is completely closed up and the birds can't get in. Once they return to there old loft and find nothing there they will follow there tracks back to you where they will find food and water etc. The birds will prob always take a trip back to there old ground but will return to you. In the early 90's i had to move in a hurry, moved the loft on Saturday, let the birds out on the monday and raced them taking a 3rd in the midweek on the wednesday. Phil

Phil so you wouldent recommend pairing them to my hens and trying what you have said ?
pjc Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 it wouldn't do any harm to pair them when you move them, keep them hungry and then they've got the added incentive of the hens. If you let the hens out with them they may well follow the hens back if they do go off.

Guest IB Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 That's quite a lot of new pigeons, and quite a short period to get them broken and settled in for racing this year. Being from the same loft, could cause problems when and if you let them out together, numbers and old habits might make them go back to the old loft. You maybe want to start with them all in the same section, at least they will know each other, fitted with some sort of viewing cage from day 1. It would be good to get them broken before eggs come along, you could start by letting them outside one at a time, without their hen, and if any do go back to old loft if it's still there, arrange to show them that there is nothing there for them any more, no food, water, box, or mate.

jimmy white Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 i would put a lookout cage or crate where the birds could see all around,[throw a handfull of grain in this each day] pair them to your own hens let them out when settled to a box and driving,,, then , on no account ever let them in the old loft ,, they will return where they last saw grub,,,and there mates good luck
phillips Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 ive just broken 4 cocks out well just over a wk ago all i did was settle them to a box and pair them up got them on eggs and let lib there still here now so fingers crossed ive broken them ive had them out 5 times now they came from a loft about 1 mile away cheers jason
phillips Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 i cant be the judge of that mate its your call it really depends on how settled they are and how they act when your in the loft if they never been flying i wouldnt chance it there is a risk theyll get on wing and may not be seen again cheers jason
