mark croker Posted September 23, 2009 Report Posted September 23, 2009 How do you sort out your hens, i had 24 hens and managed to get them down to 18 but still need to get rid of 5, all good hens and well bred, i dont race hens so no way to judge the very best out of them, would be interesting to see how everyone else pulls there hair out with this one ;D
No 1 Posted September 23, 2009 Report Posted September 23, 2009 Have brothers in the race team performed well, keep the hens that are related to the best cocks, its a start, did any show any stress when breeding, the odd wild one, check the tail and flights for frets, kill an extra one, then go back in the cocks section & find one to dispose of in there, you will have a stronger loft in the long run !!!!
pjc Posted September 23, 2009 Report Posted September 23, 2009 above advice is good but after that if you still have spares, go through them/handle them in the dark and whatever doesn't match the constitution, build etc you are looking for then part with them. By doing it in the dark you judge them equaly and you can't see if one is a favourite etc.
No 1 Posted September 23, 2009 Report Posted September 23, 2009 Don't cheat by turning the light on, make sure the birds are not over weight when handling in the dark !!!!!!!! Another one, starve them for 3-4 days, any showing any stress & lack of constitution go in the bin, very hard to do. Why don't you just race the bloody things. Lol
Guest j.bamling Posted September 23, 2009 Report Posted September 23, 2009 i let the basket sort mine out & if you dont race hens theres nothing to worry about you dont need to cull them leave a few extra for some tricks you can play later on !!!
marmite Posted September 23, 2009 Report Posted September 23, 2009 all hens have to race here over the chanell yearlin hens i give 1 chanel race the longest 1 in the calender that sorts them
