Best Maps for planning training?

Recommended Posts

This is the time of the year when I plan how I'm going to up my game the next year. One of the things I've been lookin at is training, but I'd also like to 'see' the lie of the land. Don't drive, so thinking about maps.

I thought that a traditional raised relief map showing rivers hills and valleys might be best, but the map is only A4 size, so don't think scale & detail will be good enough. I would also need to be able to superimpose the roads network onto it, so the traditional type map doesn't seem to fit the bill.

There's digital 3D systems which let you 'fly' through the area, and I wondered if anyone has used these and had an opinion on them?

The 'fly-through' idea also had me thinking about flying, and that got me looking at digital aviation maps. Any aviators on here that have used these and would they be of use for training purposes, showing the lie of the land valleys, high points etc?

think this going a little too in depth . pigeons are brighter than folk ,you may plan a route you think theyll come along ,or find a breaking point that is known . can you see where the peregrines or sparrowhawks or more so the thermal rises or blasts of cold air ?? no Ian .non of those things on any map??                                 andy.
