salukiboy82 Posted August 9, 2009 Report Posted August 9, 2009 hi everyone.another novice here looking for a bit of advice. I have only had my birds since feb and having never owned or even been interested (if im being honest) in the creatures before i have had to try and do a lot of research and brainpicking in order to better my knowledge of the birds and sport. i understand that it is going to take a while until im up to scratch but in the mean time i do not want my birds to suffer because of my inexperience. So, on to my problem. Up until last week i thought i was on track with my birds as they were exercising well, trapping well, ect. but then 4 days ago i noticed some watery droppings, some yellowy and one or two slimy green and on the perch's there was food.i let them out for their fly and when i was calling them in after approx 1hr, nothing not a bird came.when i eventually spotted them on a rooftop some 200 yards away i was bewildered as they could hear me whistle and still refused to come.they came of their own accord later in the day and so i decided not to feed that day.on coming into the loft the next day my heart sank as everywhere i looked instead of the normal nutty browns i saw all droppings were gone the same as the few the day before.(slimy green). i got some advice and took all minerals and grits out and gave them amoxycillan in the water which i am to continue for 7 days.(day 2 now). i was due to enter my first race today which i couldnt and i am wondering if i will b able too send next week if its cleared up or do i need to hold on and build them back up again as i am guessing that a weeks treatment and no min, grit or vits will knock them back a good bit. so please guys and gals if i could get some thoughts on if im doing the right thing and what i should do with them as regards racing in the following weeks.
blackdog Posted August 9, 2009 Report Posted August 9, 2009 dont send next week mate if you dont want to lose them as they will not be over it in a week, keep them in, continue there treatment then put them on a good probiotic for 2 or 3 days then put on nystatin for further 3 days, they will tell you when they are right, rest, light diat, dont rush them.
Guest the gers Posted August 9, 2009 Report Posted August 9, 2009 Get there dropings tested dont just treat blind. as it could be a hole lot of things wrong with them

Guest IB Posted August 9, 2009 Report Posted August 9, 2009 Sorry to hear you've a problem. You are right to be concerned about the birds, droppings alone sometimes don't really help, and you need to look for other signs to confirm you have a problem, like birds sitting hunched up and looking miserable, or feeding on the perches which confirms some have vomited. Why they have vomited is a different story, if you smell the vomited grain and it reeks of alcohol, then its been in the crop for a while and fermenting (yeast) so you've maybe a gut blockage problem; if it smells 'fresher' like ordinary damp grain smell, its maybe something they've eaten in the last hour or so, like moss from roof, that's made them vomit. Apart from the few problem birds, the others droppings will change (1) if they have missed a meal or two (2) if their diet has been changed or (3) they are deprived of grit. So this will be a learning experience for you. You've a medication and a time period for the course of treatment. Birds will need confined during that period. So you'll need to first watch that they are recovering during the treatment (droppings come back to normal, all birds look tight feathered & alert) then at the end of it let them out for exercise (to make sure they fly freely); if that's OK, train them (a couple of tosses just to make sure they home quickly and without problems) - all before you go to the next race. So count it all up on the calendar, plan it out, and that'll tell you when your next race is likely to be. Best wishes. Know that you will be gutted but you'll feel more like an Old Hand at the end of it all and your first race will feel all the better. An achievement in itself.

salukiboy82 Posted August 10, 2009 Author Report Posted August 10, 2009 just to give an update on the birds. the droppings hav gotten a bit solider but still not firm. there is about 10 of the 30 gone light. and i am not sure if its related but there is what i can only describe as a dandruff like substance on some of the perch's. all reply's very much appreciated.
Big2bees Posted October 12, 2009 Report Posted October 12, 2009 Dandruff-like substance are crusts from growing feathers. It's probably that your birds are experiencing too much stress because they're molting, hence the watery droppings. You can have one of your bird's droppings examined just to confirm if it's an infection or just stress-related symptoms, otherwise you could do more harm to your bird if you give them any medications especially antibiotics. You should also provide them with a high protein diet together with some vitamin supplements if you confirmed that they're molting. As far as I know, it's not good to race birds unless molting is finished. Hope this helps.
