I'm thinking of replacing the felted roof and putting a tiled apex roof on the loft, I was thinking of leaving a 3 inch gap front/back for the airflow but was wondering what your thoughts are on boarding or felting under the tiles.

i wouldnt board, just put a false mesh ceiling underneath. You wouldnt want to stop ventilation  :-/

They look nice but a chimney in each section can be as good if not better, and a lot cheaper of course! Failing that as Josh says but you must make sure that there is an air movement in the false ceiling area to draw the air out of the sections.
