There is also a risk of severe injury should someone get stuck in wire as the full current would pass through the body. (try dropping a spanner accross battery terminals). The fence energisers have electronic circuitry which pulse a high voltage/low current every second and are very safe and effective in operation. Energisers are not that expensive to buy or run especially if you have a power source nearby. The thing to remember with electric fencing is that the cat or fox etc. has to be earthed (touching the ground or something that is earthed so if your electric fence is high of the ground i.e. on top of a garden fence the garden fence will need to be conductive which can be done using chicken wire netting.
