I have been leaving the food hopper with the YBs all day but have now noticed that are getting fussy with their food and chucking the stuff they don't like around the loft. Is it time to cut back or start feeding for an hour only ?  :-/

feed down until they start to drink and then food away, or down for 20 minutes and then up , or add barley and when they start leaving the barley take the food away, all these will work

Hungry birds are well controlled birds  ;)

i think this is a case of too much food down at once and also bamfords breed and wean too much maples which are actualy toxic be better mixing with green peas ;) feeding my ybs 3 parts green pea to 1 part maple pea

Dogs and pigeons are much the same. Put the food down, use a clicker, buzzer or whistle. Pick it up after five minutes. Try to judge it so that you put about the right amount of food down in the first place. Then if any bird is slow to enter the loft, it will have to wait until the next feed. There has to be a balance struck between starving them and training them.

I personally do not like the system of stopping the food when the first bird goes for a drink. Very often there can be a variety of ages in the young bird loft and the younger ones need to be treated fairly. Taking the food away from them too quickly will spoil them. Besides I do not like the drinkers to be available until after I have fed the birds. Some birds will go to the drinker before they have eaten properly, which will do them no good and give you a false  impression of whether they have eaten all they should.

The test for me is whether or not the birds respond to the Clicker. Pigeons should be keen to eat at meal times and should react when the Clicker is sounded. I say this because meal times are a valuable oportunity to teach them their manners. If you fail to do this you will end up with birds that do not hold you in any regard and will want to do as they like, when they like.
